Official 1998 Sea Ray Sundancer 290 Thread

Hey so just a quick update, took the boat out Saturday with the Queen, grand parents, Twins 2A,2B. Didn’t strain anything ran between 2K and 2.5K rpms. 12-15mph per the GPS track. Stayed out about 2 hours. Oil pressure 50PSI both engines and Port engine 160, Starboard 165 temps. Same story yesterday except just the Queen and I. We ran almost the length of the lake and had a nice ride. Left at 11:30 back at the dock 2:30. A bit windy getting back in but pretty normal for here. It was nice to be out.
So here is what I did’t tell you about Sundays cruise, about half way back the Queen gets a text on her watch that twins 2A/2B were in an accident and totaled the Mazda close to Asheville where twin 2B goes to school (WCU), wasn’t her fault and everyone came through with minor cuts and bruises. So the Queen in her suit mind you jumps in the Lincoln and retrieves twin 2A, a 2.75 hour ride each way, twin 2B’s BF gets her and they go to their apt. Here’s the boat part, after the Queen leaves my shore power goes off. I reset everything and nothing. I pull the cable from the boat socket and have this.

Super electrician comes to thee boat Tuesday and says “Jon this is not good”, further investigation and he finds this

Power and Neutral are melted together, his forensics are that PO shorted the shore power cable at some point and it just took time and heat to ruin it. Silver lining, it’s all fixed, new receptacle and boat breaker and we didn’t burn the marina down. Whew, I love my boat.

same thing happened on our 290 so I’m religious in checking the receptacles for wear or heat. I had to replace the receptacle and cable after I was showing 50v at the panel. Turns out corrosion ate the whole receptacle apart after 18 years

Love your positivity.

BTW I think we should all be looking at that electrical connection.
I'll put that on my next list of "to-do's"

when you have some extra time take that false wall out and inspect behind the receptacle as well, if moisture or water gets back there it wreaks havoc

Most if us will not have these.

I think the early and even the late 98's when they were changing over to the 99's had round lights (12v/110v) in the cabin. But I could be wrong.

Can you post up some interior pic's of your 99.
Here you are sir.

So when you slide the plastic out of the way it’s two fluorescent bulbs, I don’t remember the exact size, either 12” or 14”. I’m just wondering if any of you have found a cool fixture to replace them with. I’ve found a few surface mount that are dimmable! Yay

It is probably just your up and down solenoids that went bad. If ya have to you can take the 4 screws out of the plate and move the entire assembly closer to you. If its the up its the top one, if its the down its the bottom one. Just remember when redoing the wires blue is up (sky) green is down ( grass )
Jeff - If I connect the blue to the red from the battery and the drive goes up, it's the solenoid - correct?

It's cool to see the differences between years.

I like your replacement lights. What kind of mounting plate did you use?

BTW your kitchen is on the wrong side of the boat. :D
Lowes outdoor rated cover plate, I’m going to change to white screws and see if I like those. Plus Hmmm I think yours is incorrect

My emojis don’t post, what am I doing wrong?

Funny you say that Ryan, my shore power voltage was always good until it was zero. But, the battery charger never kept up with the house battery demand. Now all is good, super electrician says “yep, now the boat has proper voltage AND amperage everything is happy”

Hey quick question for everyone as I am not near my boat. Does anyone know the distance between the rear facing seat and the seat along the transom? I want to buy a cooler to put crossways in there and trying to pick one that fits the first time lol!

Thanks!

25 inches exactly.

Well pretty much ready for the North Channel trip now. Got the Dinghy mounted on its davits, outboard strapped down and bunch of jobs done.

(Flame suit on), I grabbed a Generac 2500 portable generator and an adaptor plug. It fits in the transom locker and can power the a/c, water heater, microwave and stove (individually of course). Will be enough to get me by for the trip.

Looks great, so many questions as I’m looking to fit Davits to mine. These don’t look like Weavers, so what type? Standard length or extended? What length support struts did you use?

The swim platform has Weaver Snap davits with the slide in brackets and retaining pins. My boat came with the slide in brackets already in place, so I bought a set of snap davits used (standard length). The standoffs and glue on pads came from Aquamarine Boats in British Columbia. There prices were better than the Weaver stuff and all compatible. Here is the link to their site, they also sell on Amazon but you can buy direct for less.

The standoffs are adjustable 24"- 30" with snap clips at both ends. I had the L brackets on my transom already, so I just had to add brackets to the dinghy, one screwed to the transom and a glue on one to the bow. I will see how the wind catches the dinghy, I may shorten the standoffs to pull it in closer. Right now they are at 30".

Trickiest part is fitting the glue pads. I did it myself, and due to the fact the boat had the brackets all pre installed the glue pads had to be installed dead on accurate. There is quite a procedure to glueing to PVC, but follow the instructions and you will be OK.

How do you change the light bulbs in the OEM 1998 wall sconces.

It has that plastic shade and I tried to pull it off even wiggling from side to side and I really don't want to break them.

And what LED light bulb has folks gone with for the little round puck lights above the sink and in the bathroom. I bought some white G4 6000 K led bulbs and they are a little to long.
