Official (1990-1993) 270/290 DA thread

Finally in the water 5/26! Memorial Day weekend was ok....270 runs great but we had severe thunderstorms Sunday PM and the river was all muddy on Monday. Plenty of boats out Monday but pumping muddy water through my motor is not going to happen. We hung out at the Club Dock and cooked out at the Clubhouse. Plenty of friends to visit with. We had a nice cruise Saturday and stopped and had dinner at Haywoods on the Water.....nice restaurant with nice docks. Put the camper top up due to pending bad weather. No leaks in the cabin with the top on/up! You have to make the best with the weather you have I guess. I needed relaxation after waxing the 270 for 12 hours on Friday. Monday was still a nice day to Honor our Men & Women who gave the Ultimate Sacrifice, Mike.

Hi fellow Sea Ray 270 owners - hello from sunny Perth, Western Australia. Apologies if I cause any indiscretions with my first post! Took delivery of our 1992 Sea Ray 270 last week and had a strange issue with the freshwater. Before heading off, boat and trailer were parked in the driveway, bow was inclined downwards as we had backed it up our sloping driveway. Before filling freshwater tank, bilge was completely dry as was carpet in the cabin between the galley and the head. I filled up freshwater tank, and did not notice any overflow from the vent however I heard water gurgling from somewhere inside the boat and stopped filling up. Next day discovered the storage area on the port side in the bilge was full of water, there is a nylex hose there that empties the fresh water tank - the tap to this was in the closed position. Emptied the water from that area and then discovered that the carpet between the galley and head was soaked with freshwater. Have dried this up however does anyone have any thoughts on the reason why freshwater may have leaked into the cabin carpet and would it have caused any damage to the structure of the area underneath? Could the filling of the tank when the bow was inclined downwards have caused the vent to not work and overflow somehow into the cabin?
Cheers

We have the same boat, from what I can tell if you have a fitting leaking to the tank it should stay in the bilge area. I'd be worried your water tank may have frozen and split up front.

The only other way would be for the plumbing to the bathroom to be leaking. If you heard gurgling it sounds
like a large leak, the fact that you could hear it means you can find it. Don't give up the ship!

The water won't hurt anything as long as you dry it out good with fans.

I had / maybe have the same problem. I filled the fresh water tank from the port side fill and heard the same noise. I had my daughter continue filling while I went below. I found the hose connection to the tank leaking. I tightened it up and it stopped making the noise. Let see - the water on the floor in front of the bathroom, most likely when you filled the tank you had the water level high enough were it came out a loose hose in the bathroom or kitchen. If you over flow the toilet it also ends up on the galley floor. I left The faucet open in the bathroom once of course the sink drain was closed it flows quite nicely into the galley floor. I finally recaulked the bathroom's front panel so now it has to overflow out the bathroom door. Spend some time and find the leak. There is only a thin layer of gelcoat over cheap plywood with a hundread staples in it. All the aft cabin wood is structural support for the hull, rotten wood means no hull support.

Grom, how did you end up with a 6.2L /smartcraft/Bravo 3 in a 1992 boat? With your first post you may have won the award for the most expensive updrade ever to a 270/290. Lets see my 270 + trailer + tow vehicle < 6.2l/ Bravo 3 !

Hi Don
Thank you for the comments! Very interesting boat, we have been looking for a boat since October last year and finally found this one. In 2006, the boat was repowered with the 6.2 MPI Horizon with FWC and Bravo III. Current hours are around 260. At the same time the smartcraft instruments were fitted. The trailer was replaced in 2005 (GVM 4000kg). The boat also has separate Ctex chargers and isolators for the house and start batteries. All the electrics were also changed. The owner before me purchased the boat in 2010. The boat then had the HDS10 fitted, with the trackfish 6600 converted to display smartcraft data. All fuel lines have been changed and a new deckwash pump fitted. It runs very well with the Bennett trim tabs installed. There really is nothing wrong with the boat, I had it surveyed prior to purchase and it passed all checks.
The only thing is the trim fault indicator, the sender unit does not work and the advice here in Perth is to not replace the sender unit, as they constantly fail.
My wife and kids simply love the boat, it looks really nice and feels very good on the water.

Mysticowner, thank you for your reply too, the freshwater issue is still a puzzle to me. I know the boat and the previous owner and it never leaked. I reviewed the water schematic, looks like a fully sealed system with the vent taking care of overflow.
I checked the bathroom, it was completely dry and the run off area under the aft cabin also seemed OK.
I think what happened is when the boat was angled bow down and the freshwater tank was being filled, water would have flowed under pressure into the piping of the sink and bathroom. If the pipes there had a small crack or leak, the amount of water heading there could have caused the problem.

My major concern is if the area under the cabin has somehow filled up with water that there would be damage to the structure under the cabin floor? The carpets are pretty much dry now…

Cheers

Hi Don
Good idea, I will check out the pipe to the freshwater tank this weekend. If that pipe is leaking it could explain the water in the bilge the day after filling. I'll let you know how things go.
Cheers

Something not to do, Leave the garden hose in the fill and turn it on and leave it on till water comes out. First time I did that and the midecabin cushion was lifted up that was on top of the tank. Top of the tank split in a few places and started to leak. Luckly I was there and was just got into the tank area only. The water chouldn't get away fast enough so it built pressure up in the tank a plit it. The vent was not plug, water was coming out of the vent and around the hose. Didn't think about what I was doing at the time, just wanted to fill it up and when the water come out it was full, mistake!

BB,
Wow a leaking fresh water tank is scary. If the leak is small and undetected it would rot the aft cabin wood in no time. A good PM program would replace the fuel lines as Grom did, they are not designed for E10 gas and to inspect all fresh/black water lines each season.

Hi BB, I was told to keep the freshwater tank filled as much as possible to reduce the amount of air in the tank. This is intended to reduce the water from going foul. Definetely looks like filling to the top can be an issue in some cases...

We are hoping the weather will be OK to launch the boat this Saturday so will have a better look, otherwise we have storm fronts for the week...

Cheers

I think most of my problem was the water pressure from the hose, The water chouldn't get away from the out the vent fast enough, so it built pressure up in the tank that was not disigned to have pressure in it. From now on if I use the hose, Run it slow and watch how much in in the tank.

this is my Lowance HDS 8 at WOT. I may not have beend trimmed out all the way and I was going into the wind 90 degree heat.

There's one from lower speed. I should have took one at 30 mph. I had it doing 33 mph at 4600 rpms, tach are set right this time also. Busy day on a small lake witch made it hard to do a lot. Took me half the time out there figuring out how to do these screen shots and the the Lowrance HDS 2 unit keep wanting to reboot, Another problem, Don't want to send it in right now. It better make the summer. This is all just to give somebody an Idea what the fuel consumption is on this 270/290 witht the 4.3s.

Hi BB
Nice work on the images, did you get the screenshots copied to a removable card in the GPS unit? I will have to look into the same thing for our GPS, the HDS10. We went out last Saturday and had a fantastic days cruising on the ocean. We sailed about 16 nm into Fremantle harbour and tied up to the fishing boat harbour and bought some fish and chips and had them on the boat. I have always wanted to do this, so we had a great time. When we were tied up there was a another similar vintage Searay tied up - the badge said 31. This looked like a wider body version of the 270 and it has the same cabin entrance configuration. Just a bigger boat had twin engines and very tidy! Does anyone know of this model?

No issues with the freshwater this time, the kids and the wife had a great time. This was in between some pretty big storms over the week here in Perth. This next Saturday looks good, trying to convince the boss admiral that we should try to sail to Rottnest island - just about 17 nm off our coast. If the wife does not want to go out, I will head out to the boat and install the new fenders.

I am really impressed with these Searay 270 boats of this vintage. The previous owner gave me a cut out of the hull which was used to mount the in hull transducer for the HDS10 - very strong looking hull material!

Anyway guys, have a great week and all the best!
Cheers

Yes, I made a screed shot by turning on the capture fuction in the system setting, then you just push the light/power button briefly. Then go to the page button, files then copiey to the SD card right or left.

Quint, Do you have any picture's of how your windlass was done up. I'm thinking about putting a windlass on the boat again.

thanks
Dan

I don't have many good pics. The first two pics I took the day I first went and looked at the boat. It is a Lewmar. The previous owner added that large Bollard for some reason...I'll never know.

Were did they run the wire and the controls for the windlass?

Wire runs down starboard side. Breaker is in cabinet under sink.
