Official (1990-1993) 270/290 DA thread

Now my Boat has even more holes in it!!! But this will give me choice were to mount my 9'4" dinghy on the back of my 9 foot beam boat.

This time I made a bracket to run the screws into instead of trying to hold the washers and nuts up. the only thing wrong with this is it's not stainless steel.

Looks like a great idea, real hard to reach back into that cavity in the swim platform with anything. Found out trying to tighten swim ladder hardware. What about a couple good coats of Rustoleum rust prohibitor on that bracket before install, not pretty paint but it seems to do the trick against rust. I may be doing the same type of installation once we find a decent dingy. Like the Pics you've posted, very informative.

A new air floor dinghy needs a new pump. I don't know how good this is going to be, but it cost enough and is already possibly screwing up.

Hey Everyone,
Hope I am posting this in the right spot. New to this site and this my first post. Got myself into a 1992 290 Sundancer recently.
Single 7.4L 454. I interested in finding out typical cruising speeds/rpms, top end speeds of comparable boats.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi chris,
You will find a huge amount of great info on this site. There are some very knowlegable folks here. I have a 1990 270 dancer with the 454 and a bravo one drive. I get about 22-25 mph at 3100 rpm depending on sea conditons, haven't really rung her out yet, so can't be of much help for top end. The bottom of the boat is currently painted with antifouling paint that I want to remove as I'm trailering the boat now and don't need the bottom paint. That I suspect will change speeds once I remove the paint. Good Luck with your 290!

Looking to take my first long distance excursion in my boat. A 14 hour trip (7each way). Need to plan my pit stops. Thinking maybe 12GPH under normal sea conditions? Sound about right for my set up?

What trip do you plan on doing?

Detroit River (Belle Isle) up to Tawas Bay in Lake Huron. Would like to make it to Port Austin to refuel but may settle for Port Sanilac. 100 gallon tank.

looks like about a 130 gallons each way. I still would like to know how many useable gallons there is in the tank. You can't fill it 100% and you can use 100% of the fuel. I have just figure about 80 gallons you can plan on being usable to be safe. A 120 gallon tank would be nice just to have a full 100 gallons of fuel on board, Then you accually chould go someware on the great lakes and not having the neddle on "E" when you get there. I need to run this boat out of gas and then fill it to see how much I have to use. I done this on one of my other boat, just carried a gas can when I planed on doing it. Worked out well, that one had a 44 gallon tank, can't remeber how much gas it took, but I sure was no were's 44 gallons,

This boat is running about 1.55 miles to the gallon on GPS or Odometer on gps and gallons it took to get that far. (most trips) So far the GPS fuel sensor have been with in a gallon or two at a 50 gallon fill up. The last trip in the fall was Up and detour and the boat was running 1.70 mile's to the gallon on the gps and that is what the Odometer and gallons figure out to on the fill up. I don't know why it did better this time. I'm also running two gps's. I use the garmin odometer to accumlate mile's to caculate the fuel milage at the end of the trip, Lowarnce has the fuel meters. My fuel figure's for the Twin 4.3 270 sea ray should be accuate. I'm really suprised one how little the speed makes in the MPG. I figure it would make more of a difference.
One thing that was suprising this year. One the way back for Beaver Island to the mainland, I had 4 adults and 4 kids aboard with the dinghy and motor. We were running into the wind and rough enough to keep the trim tabs down to keep the nose down for a little better ride. The boat would reading better milage than on the way there with the wind and wave's to our back. If I pick the tabs up, ride would go down and milage would also. Seems like 27 mph was my cruising speed I was holding, 1.5 mpg. It just depends on conditions and weight for what milage you get.

I cruise between 27 and 33 mph

We bought a new toy, so, a little less boating will be in the cards this year. Instead of spending a month on the boat, we will have a little more space on dry land :)

Looks Great! Enjoy. There are alot of great places to visit.

Photobucket has changed their whole format. I used to be able to just copy a picture in photobucket and then paste it into a post on the SR site. Now, when I try that, all that I get is a pint sized picture.
Does anyone know how to post a full size picture?

Welcome Chris! I'm running a Bravo 1 with a 4 blade Mercury stainless 17P. It's a 14.25" prop which is smaller than a Bravo II prop. I cruise at 3600rpms and top out at 4600rpms. 26-38 mph are my gps speeds that the boat works best at. Hull runs perfect at 30mph at 3800-3900rpms but the 4bbl is in action at that point. Figure 1.5mpg at best....16 to 17 gallons per hour at cruise, Mike.

Thanks Cv.
I am learning quite a bit on this site.
My prop is a 3 blade aluminum 17.75 x 21. Still have yet to figure out my optimum cruising speed and at what rpm the 7.4L likes to run at. I have heard both sides of the coin. (Lwr rpms as opposed to higher rpms.)

You never want to lug the engine at a lower rpm and it also makes it harder to get on plane. I'm propped for 4600 rpms WOT with 2 of us on board/full water/food and fuel. With six adults I still can run at 4400 rpms. I need a bit of tab to get on plane faster if everyone is seated in the cockpit vs a few in the cabin. My boat performs best at 3800-4000rpms, Mike.
