Official 1980's Weekender/Sundancer 300 thread

Anyone have the part number for the impeller on the 300 Weekender with the 5.7 and fresh water cooling?

Good morning Classic Owners. I am having what I think is probably a "how dumb can you be problem." I want to install a couple of charging outlets near the helm. I purchased the West Marine brand double outlet and wired it to the fuse panel under dashboard. I double checked everything to make sure that I have positive to positive and negative to negative. When I use a standard iPhone/iPad charger in the outlet, it blows the charger out. What am I doing wrong?

Is this the double USB outlet?

What size fuse are you using?

Yes. Double outlet. It has two USB built into one outlet and the other is a "cigarette outlet" style. Not sure about the fuse size. I will check next time I'm at the boat. BTW both the built in USB and the iPhone charger that I plug into the outlet are blowing out. I tried two different charger in the traditional outlet and both do not work to charge the iPad.

When you say "Blowing out", do you mean that when you insert something in to it to charge it makes the fuse for that curcuit blow? Or, is something happening to the outlet fixture itself?

Opinion Requested on 1987 300DA

Hello everyone,

I have been on the site for a couple of years now and really enjoy reading the comments from you all. I also respect all of the expertise presented here which is why I am coming to you with this question.

I have an opportunity to purchase a 1987 300DA and am going to look at it tomorrow morning (Tuesday). The seller has a survey from a couple of years ago and gave it to me to look over. I would like your opinion on it and hope that you might be able to answer some questions for me. My biggest concern is in the general comments section. I am not sure if the current owner has dealt with these but the comments are as follows:

1. High moisture levels were noted to the swim platform. In sounding this area it is beginning to show signs for separation and/or deterioration developing.

2. High moisture levels were noted o the stringers, bulkheads and sub-floors under the mid cabin. In sounding these areas they appear sound at present.

3. High moisture levels were noted to the stringers, sub-floors and engine begs in the engine compartment. In sounding these areas they appear sound at present.

4. High moisture readings were noted to the transom, in sounding this area it appears sound at present.

The last comment is: Structurally the vessel appeared in sound condition, no visible evidence of fractured or separated secondary laminations where inspections could be made. Cosmetically the vessel appeared in good condition with only a couple of minor scratches. the interior consists of cloth, vinyl and carpeting, all of which appears in good condition. The engines were given a visual inspection only, and although they appeared clean and well maintained with 950.2 on Port and 1045.7 on Starboard, we offer no comment as to their operating ability. Our inspection of the area below the water line found no visual evidence of gel coat fatigue or blistering.

My biggest concerns are numbers 3 and 4. From your infinite experience, what would your recommendations be? I will take all of your opinions very seriously and will not enter into any agreement without first securing another survey and an engine analysis.

Thanks for your time. I am looking forward to entering the cruiser world from the world of the bow rider!

Thanks,

In my humble opinion..... If the owner hasn't dealt with this stuff....and he hasn't or he would be bragging about the money he put in.....

i would run away unless the boat is a steal. Once the stringers start to show areas of delam or damage on a 30 year old boat with mid to higher time engines. You won't be able to give it away.

if you really love the boat, and it is cheap... Spend some quick survey money and have those trouble spots looked at again ... Now 2-3 years later and see if they are still moisture level high, with no sound of delam..... And decide how much risk you like..

that is my humble opinion.

there are other boats out there.

good luck in the boat hunt.

Not an expert myself but have seen some others learn the hard way, and I agree with Rocky. The price includes slip for 2015--deduct that value from the list price to see how much you'd be paying for the boat itself and use that to make your decision on whether to consider purchasing. If you do want to make an offer and will be slipping at the same marina, figure your boat value first, then tack slip cost into it for the final number. If you'll be slipping elsewhere, that part of the cost is the current owner's problem, not yours.

Good luck any which way you go!

I'm sorry, I'm with Rocky on this one. If your heart is set on this boat pay for another survey.

Had a look at the boat today and my better judgement (and thanks to the feedback) say walk away.

Thanks folks. Still looking!

There is a 28' SeaDancer here at a good price, pm me if you want more info

Dock mate has a GREAT 88 300 Weekender for sale. It just had a ton of work done. I'll bet you could get it for under 10K. It's located in CT.

I am in the process of buying a 1987 300 weekender. My concern is that it list a little bit starboard. A few inches maybe. There's no water in the bilge, can anyone give me some suggestions as to what might be causing the list? I don't think it's a difference in fuel between the tanks, because the gauges read about the same.

Fresh water tank is empty or holding tank is full. Mine does the same when it's launched in the spring until I fill the fresh water tank.

This is great to know. I literally just hung up with the marina and they said the same thing. They put water in the tank and it leveled out. So do you run with a full water tank all the time?

Yes, we stay on the boat from Friday nite till Sunday nite. I keep it full and use a fresh water treatment that is sold in the RV section at WallyWorld.

I run with 1/2 tank of water, just the keep the weight down. I do everything I can to keep the holding tank empty.

Here are some pics from today's inspection. She's getting a hull cleaning and the trim tab rams replaced. Should have the deal squared away early next week.
