We were in Sturgis this past summer and bought fuel at Skipper Buds at Quarter Deck Marinia they use off road fuel I wounder why no else uses this type, fuel it was a lot cheaper about .40 cents a gallon.

I seen off road fuel at Leeland, MI. $3.99 at the time, same as at the pump for on road was on land.

What do you consider "off road" fuel?

What do you consider "off road" fuel?

"off road fuel" would be what a farmer would buy to use in tractors and has no road taxes included. Does marina gas and deisel have road tax or are there marine taxes added on it? MM

Did you know that all non-ethanol gas has a 10 cent tax added just because it does NOT contain ethanol.

Gas does have highway taxes in it, and if you meet a certain threshold....something like $2500...... purchased for your boat you can request a rebate. Off-road diesel at marinas has no highway taxes in the price if it is dyed red. Every marina selling diesel around here is selling off-road fuel. It is illegal to run red dyed fuel in any vehicle capable of running on the highway. The fine is horrendous and is a real deterent here...........they impute (make up) the amount of illegal fuel the state investigators figure you have used and charge you 2X the highway tax and they impound your truck or car until you remove the off road fuel from it.

I pay just over $0.60/gallon less for off road diesel than on road in PA. It sue is limitedc to off road and has dye in it as others have mentioned. we run it in farm and industrial equipment. I have had the state IRS dip our bulk fuel and some equipment tanks with dye paper to check to see if we are cheating. the fines can be expensive and it is not worth the risk . I have not been fined. PA has a lot of road tax on diesel. I have not tried to purchase off road gas. .

The fuel taxes are state controlled, so it varies by state how you can either claim back taxes paid for off road use, or suppliers can sell fuel for off road. In Mass the vendors have to jump through hoops to sell off road gasoline, and as a result it can be hit, or miss, on whether you pay for the taxes on gas. While there is not the volume threshold that Frank mentions here, the records have to be meticulously kept and the paperwork process is pretty rigorous. I do know from my fleet management days that it is well worth the effort to claim back the taxes on terminal vehicles like yard tractors and forklifts.

Not having a diesel boat I can't comment on marine diesel. However as a home owner who heats with oil, I do know that my heating oil comes though with dye in it.

When I had a gas boat, I was well above the threshold for claiming the tax refund on highway taxes. It looked like free money to me, so I set out to do it. I quickly discovered that the problem was not proving that I bought XX gallons of gasoline, but proving how much I really consumed in off-road equipment. Each state is different, but claiming the rebate here was a real gold plated hassle.

This is WI policy
Off-Road Usage of Motor Vehicle Fuel [sec. 78.75, Wis. Stats.] Wisconsin law provides that motor vehicle fuel is not subject to the Wisconsin motor vehicle fuel tax when it is used for off-road purposes in mobile machinery and equipment. Exceptions: It is subject to the motor vehicle fuel tax when placed into licensed motor vehicles used for off-road purposes, snowmobiles, recreational motorboats, and all-terrain vehicles (unless the ATV is registered for private use).
