Noticed lights were very dim end of season. Now on the hard and see one of the lights has significant salt built up behind the lense - an obvious leak. Does this require a complete unit change? Anyone know what the oem lights used by SR were this year? Thanks.

If your lights are the same as these, then it's very possibly a deterioration of the reflector ( faux chrome conical shaped part ) inside, not a leak. What looks like salt granules, are actually small pieces of the finish on the " cone ", that have settled to the bottom of the fixture. You can disassemble the fixture from the ER. You'll need to slide out and replace the anodized aluminum sleeve that contains the reflector. If the sleeve can not be removed from the bronze housing, then you'll need to remove the entire light assembly from the transom for repair. When reassembling, make sure to coat the sleeve with " Tef Gel " ( found at BOE and boating supply stores). The Tef Gel will prevent the aluminum sleeve from oxidizing itself to the bronze housing. DO NOT TOUCH OR DAMAGE BULB WITH OILY FINGERS, very very pricey. SeaRay customer service can tell you the manufactures name. Good luck, Tim

Tim, I have similar lights and when I purchased my boat there was a leak that let sea water drip on the housing. I can't get the reflector out to replace! I figure I will wait until I haul the boat before I fiddle around with it too much. I plan on retrofitting with led lights. The xenon lamps draw too much at 35W each!

Hi Ken, I've never had to replace a bulb and the power draw is yesterday's technology. W/O a doubt, the LEDs are the way to go. On pg 16, sub paragraph 2, article b) it says periodically lube anodized aluminum sleeve :smt101 Obviously, that's rarely observed, until you've had to remove one from the transom. If you're a DIY guy and decide to replace w/ OEM, unscrew light cap assembly, back out large " backing nut ", place a 2 x 4 against bronze housing and do the hammer thing. Running a razor or putty knife around the exterior side of light will help. Two people on the job will help from cracking exterior Gelcoat. Tim

Tim,
Thank you - that is exactly what my lights look like, and the deterioration of the reflector would explain why they looked so dim at end of season (I am guessing if I had salt water in there they would not work at all)? At this point I will need to wait until spring to try to remove as I am scheduled to be wrapped today for the winter. Thanks for the input, much appreciated.

I really can't believe there aren't more reports of this problem - or maybe I just haven't seen them. Mine lasted about a season before the reflectors visibly deteriorated. Now, after four years, they are completely gone. So much for the $5750 option. And Sea Visions answer - send in the through-hulls, and we'll put a new sleeve in for a fee. Unless I could get mine out they could send a new reflector. Impossible. Our boat is in the water full time, so how am I supposed to pull the through-hulls? This is quite a design!

I sure did like them for the first season, though...

I really wish I could get them running again. I'm surprised nobody has come out with a mod to convert these with LED's, or something that works. There has to be a ton of them out there showing the same problem.

Kevin
