Not that I hate the next few months....

I have a buddy I met in the Roush owners club years ago. He moved from upstate New York to Lake Placid FL. I always kid him about not being able to really give up New York by moving to Lake Placid FL. He's never fully adjusted to Florida and his wife died unexpectedly in July. He's struggling with the loss and although he says he's going to stay in Florida I wouldn't be surprised to see him move back north at some point.
I saw a lot of people move to Florida and move out within a couple of years. They just weren't built for the Florida weather. The time of the year Snowbirds never experience. Can't be afraid to sweat cuz you will in the summer.

I think there’s a lot to be said about that. We love Florida…for the winter. We would not like the summer heat and humidity. Can’t beat the Great Lakes for boating in the summer, Chesapeake is great too, but we just can’t deal with the western NY winters anymore. Several feet of snow at one time in a lake effect event, then it warms up and makes a mess then 37* and rain for a week, repeat. It doesn’t stay cold like it used to to build a snow pack. Snowmobiles in the mud sucks. We have a bunch of friends that own down here and we decided a while ago that wasn’t for us. Must be the Gypsy in us, we like cruising on the boat and moving around in the rv. We won’t give up the townhouse in NY, there’s no place like home near family and services you are familiar with when life serves up an obstacle, just wish we didn’t have to deal with all of the garbage political issues. Americans are blessed in this department, we can choose climates that we like either full time or part time and not have to leave the good ole USA. The park we are in now has at least 30% Ontario and Quebec folks Who are escaping the winter.

all I will say about moving to Florida full-time as somebody who is still working, and works outside for that matter:

With the burning my business partner threw me when I needed my cash for a down payment, coupled with the great price and interest rate escalation of 2021-2022 I can no longer afford the waterfront home I wanted, and it’s got me reevaluating every choice I’ve ever made.

If you have FU money Florida can be a paradise. If you do not, many things start to grate on you.

That’s the other thing, we obviously love the water, the places we go are all within a couple miles of the ocean and the gulf and the place in Ft Myers is right on the Caloosahatchee. Buying on the water or very near it is very pricy, but if one can afford it, the return has almost always been there in spades at resale time. The other issue is the remote, or maybe not so remote possibility of the hurricanes. I can’t believe how big of a hit some of our friends took on insurance lack of payment because of surge/flooding. A mile inland other friends were covered for wind damage, which was mostly minor. Yeah, for us, there’s a fourth thing that begins with F that we are better to rent. Florida. Thanks for your hospitality by the way. I promise I won’t drive my truck at the speed limit in the left lane.:)

I read this just yesterday. Although I would not do FL, boating too dam expensive, some like it, this was interesting.

Why are retirees leaving Florida?
My company relocated me to Florida in the early 1990s from Ohio and I felt like I won the lottery. My family and I loved everything about the Tampa Bay Area (except the school system) After several wonderful years we were relocated to Texas and made the best of it. With a higher income and better schools in Plano, we saved money by no longer paying private school tuition. Still, I could not wait until I had the opportunity to move back to Florida. Thirteen years ago, the opportunity presented itself and I jumped at the chance to move back to Florida. At the time I found a very affordable condo on the water and settled in for what I hoped would be a soft landing for my career and then into retirement. However, the last three Florida Governors and Legislatures have been so overwhelmingly pro business and anti citizen that I will be leaving Florida shortly. Due to the legislation after the Surfside collapse condo HOA fees have skyrocketed… not to mention homeowners insurance. Between the HOA and Homeowners insurance I am now paying more than my mortgage payment. Additionally, my auto insurance with a perfect driving record has tripled. At the same time, sales tax keeps going higher and higher.
I recently purchased a larger condo with a garage in Pennsylvania and the HOA and Homeowners insurance combined for the year is equal to what I pay in Florida in TWO months. The cute town I selected is very close to Lancaster and Hershey with all of the great Medical Care offered by UPMC, PennState Hershey Medical Center and University of Pennsylvania.
I never thought I would move back to Pennsylvania after I graduated college but now I am back and much more appreciative of the scenery, history, culture and sense of community that I never felt in Florida.

How well were you accepted being from NJ? I know being from NY has been a bitch of a time, at times, just moving to MD. I use to live in FL and back then they didn't do well with "Outsiders".

Professionally, people love me. I show up and do what I said, when I said it with a high level of competence. All of the above is rare here.

Personally I mostly keep to myself. As some of the things I post would suggest I’m a bit of an oddball and really don’t care what anyone thinks. Being a big angry looking dude with a shaved head and a full beard most people don’t bother me.

The fact that I’m not your typical blue state transplant seems to be mostly well received. I’m also a bit of a chameleon having been in customer service for my trade so long. I can pretty much fit in and interface with anyone.

Long term I wonder about banking on FL real estate returns with the current insurance challenges they face. Eventually it'll only be the ultra wealthy left there, those who can self-insure. Everyone else will have moved back to Michigan :)

For us, they love us. They know we’re only snowbirds. We leave a bunch of money, then go home to vote.

The east coast of Florida hsd/has the New England /I-95 transplants and it seemed to have a lot of the Puerto Rican transplants (also Orlando). West coast has the Midwesterners and the I-75 corridor transplants. Of course Miami is very Cuban. I'd swear Spanish is the most used language in Florida. I know, not really but a lot of conversations going on in public areas were in Spanish.

Given the chance, I'd look at the Lake Murray area in South Carolina. Still gets cold but it's far enough south it's never weeks on end.

I'm with you on SC. But I'd need to be in the HH area.

That or Charleston would be great but I'd boat on Murray and take short trips to the coast.

Not sure I could boat in such a small body of water, a bit claustrophobic not being around open water. I have trouble sometimes here in the bay.

Spit the difference try NC

No way I could live in FLA year round. Weather and also I hate being so low on the food chain, especially in the water. I was thinking 1/2 way down.

Fair point, and accurate.

I’m gonna grab some pizza, bagels, Chinese takeout and soft shell steamers and make the best of it while I’m behind enemy lines.

If you ever find yourself at the Jersey shore and need a real sub, this is the place
