Boat Info
88 Weekender 300 "Seahorse"
Engines
Twins 350
Two boats, a 38' Bayliner and another 30' boat sank this past week at River Rest Marina on the Chickahominy this past week. Both sank in 20' of water, both due to a tru haul failure cracking after the river froze. On one they had forgotten to drain a strainer and shut the seacock. From what I understand the Bayliners engines are over at Jordan Point Marina two big diesels. Will hunt more info and post

it's been that kinda winter, makes me glad as heck I'm dry-docked. Sad for the folks that lost their boats, even if insurance pays, you never end up coming out ahead having to try and find a suitable replacement. We are at 10 sunk this winter here in SW Ohio per the paper a couple weeks ago.

That's all you hear about this winter is sunken boats. I'll bet next year many more will be on land for the winter.

Around here...I would bet more folks will pay someone to winterize their boats. I've lived here 55 years, I've seen weather like this maybe three or four times. We have a great deal of folks that have moved here with their boats that have never seen one of our winter cold snaps and aren't prepared. We were walking on the ice around our boats just two weeks ago

Sure glad we sold the big boat this year. Lot less worrying when its on a trailer in the driveway.

Amen to that brother! Even here in northern Texas, a colder winter than we have had in quite a few years! At the shop this year we will be doing plenty of engine work from people not winterizing properly!

Bummer for the owners for sure. Sinkings are always a drag. I can't even stand to watch them purposely sink an old boat like they do out here for diving attractions. Our club had a 50' Sea Ray go down recently. Strainers froze and cracked. I thought there was a way of shutting them off, like a seacock or something. Glad our new boat doesn't have ANY thru hull fittings below the water line. I was always worried about them with the 260, even in the warm weather. Just doesn't seem right to me; drill a hole in bottom of your hull and put a valve in it so the water doesn't get in. You'd think with the technology we have now, they would be able to come up with some sort of supply line that is molded into the hull and brings the water into the boat from above the water line via a high pressure pump. (kinda like a peetrap in reverse or the exhaust systems on outdrives)

My boat has been in the water all winter... I had her shrunk wrapped, and that helps keep the ice and snow off the boat. So far, I think she has not sunk. My neighbors boat accross the water from me sunk at his dock two years ago in Mar, from a frozen thru hull fitting. It was the AC thru hull. He was able to pump the water out and have her towed to a local marina. He had to replace both engines, and sold the boat shortly after that... Salt water and boat electronics are a good mix...

Blair's 38 on A dock?

Which 30 footer?

The wind that comes out of the Northeast doesn't help. I wonder if either had ER heaters.

The salvage crew didn't say. Just that one was a Bayliner w twin D's and the other was a 30'. The 30 was re floated but the Bayliner was a total lose. It gave the crew the fits due to it's weight and being top heavy, it wanted to roll and turn turtle. It's engines are over there at Jordan.

It tears me up to hear news like this but it makes me wonder why folks don't go check on their boats more often. I check on mine and the three around mine once a week, the other three captains check on all of them a different day of the week. We have it set that each boat gets checked every other day. Saturdays are my boat days, that's my fix it day
