If they don't listen to your horn, you shoot them

Yep, spent 24 years as as Infantry Soldier. Love my other hobby too!

Sorry about the thread hi-jack Tawcat. Maybe we should start a new thread on spotlights. What do you think Scott??? Anyway, any air horn is much, much, better than that crap SR has been putting on their Sport cruisers for the last couple of years. The only thing is that I do remember is a very smart CSR person warning against placing the airhorns on the bow. Something about water intrusion. (maybe that's why you should keep your spotlight facing aft :) Anyway, I hope everthing works out for you. Now you can actually blow your own horn and not be embarrased. Sincerely, Brian (leader of the peoples movement against crappy SR horns...Quack...Quack)

No apology neccessary. I rather enjoyed the light stuff. All points are well taken. I may just start to run mine forward.

Another reason for the location I chose for the horns, is that it provides a natural angle so water can drain!

Can you give more details on how you made the electrical connections?
1) Is it hard to get at the harness for the original horn?
2) Do you know what the amperage draw is on your new horn and how it compares to the old horn (wondering if it needs a larger fuse or circuit breaker).
3) Any photos of the wiring?

Thanks!

I can surely take pics, but I don't think they are really required. Open up your anchor locker, stick your head inside, see where the wires are connected to the quacker; unplug them and you are set to hook up a new one! The new horns are 12v and do not require any additional circuitry.

Bought my 2002 340 last year. Thought he horn was bad. Decided to replace it last week. To my dismay the new one sounded the same...blew $70. Is there an electric replacement horn with a normal sound that fits in the same hole as the OEM?

Hornblower needs a new horn

My duck horn barely quacked last time I went out. I opened the anchor locker and reseated the spade connectors a couple of times and I was able to get a little more sound out of them; but it's more than an electric issue, even when the horn was working at its best it wasn't heard well by other boaters. I just don't want to spend money on a replacement horn that's no better than the original.

Do they make a replacement that is louder? If so what is the part number?

The original part number for my '04 260DA is 1413475 HORN DUEL BLOCK W/SPADE CONNECTORS SERIES 84 (pg. 4 of the parts manual).

I'm not sure I want to go through the trouble of air horns and finding a place to install a compressor. Also there isn't a lot of room on the 260 radar arch between the bimini and aft shade canvases. I think you would have to fabricate a bracket to raise the horns over the canvases. Installing horns on the anchor locker is interesting but I can think of instances that they would get in the way. Although if someone has a part number for Air horns they have had success with I'd consider them.

Thank you,

I replaced my OEM horn with a set of AFI air horns, mounted on top of the arch. Compressor is also mounted in the arch, was able to attach it using two of the radar dome bolts. Had to cut out the access openning a bit bigger for access. Also installed a relay and ran 14g wire up arch, big fun. Well worth it though, the new horns are plenty loud.

CJ,

I think there must be more room inside a 320 arch then a 260's to mount a compressor inside. What was the model AFI horn you used?

I picked up a hand held air horn to get by with for now.

Steve,

CJ,

I like that the Marinco 10108 air horn you used has a small footprint only 9 1/2"'s long and a single mount rather than two places to bolt down as with with longer trumpets. I see that the unit is chrome covered brass, I haven't had much luck with chrome in salt water environments.

I found this AFI 10011 dual all stainless electric horn http://www.boatingsolutions.com/AFI-Dual-Compact-Trumpet-Horn-P7015C1364.aspx that looks like an option.

Does anyone have any experience with electric trumpet horns? Do they sound like water fowl :smt001? Are they loud enough at approx 110 dB?

Steve,

My 260DA's original horn part number is 1423946. Anyone know if I were to order it, it would be new and improved and not sound like a mallard?

Steve,

My dual trumpet Ongaro horns are all stainless construction, but powder coated white (they have stainless too, but I like the look of white). They are rated at 122DB and they are VERY loud. The rating is close to air horn level.

Here is what they look like:

Just replaced my horn due to the weird sound thinking it was shot, only to realize the new horn sounded the same....just blew $70. Now I'm looking at a non sea ray replacement that sounds like a normal horn. I'm measuring the holes this weekend to see if it fits.

That's what I was afraid of. Please let me know what you come up with.

Creekwood,

I found the Ongaro site http://www.ongaromarine.com/horns.htm and one of the stainless horns they offer is the same horn and part number (10011) for the AFI horn I found on my post above. Looks like a good option particularly after your recommendation. Amazon has it for $125.55.
