I have a 75 SRV 220 hardtop. I'm wondering if there is anything in the trans or outdrive that I can check to figure out why I can't anykind of speed out of it.It has a 351 2bbl w/alpha outdrive. I can run at low speed without a problem, as soon as you give it gas it has no power. Can't get past about 8 MPH. Engine runs like a top when in Neutral, revs great.

Does the engine rev up when you try to plane out?

You could have a spun hub in the prop.

Sounds like bad gas or water in the tank. Happened to my 1980 merc 228, had to drain the tank and change the water separating filter, then all good!
it would rev fine in N, but bog down in gear (under load).

Check ignition timing and whether the distributer advance timing advance is working.

Antother thing to check is if that 351 has hydraulic lifters, you might want to check if you are using the right viscosity oil. If the oil is too thin the lifters will collapse at higher RPM, and the valves wont be opening fully which creates a bogging. Given the age of that motor, you should be using the higher viscosity oil if they give you a range. Probably 40W single grade.

If the engine bogs down its a running issue.
Check timing ... points if still equipped and maybe change fuel filters and water separators
could be carb adjustment too.
but definitely not in the drive unless its SEVERELY over propped

what is happining when you try to plane? does the engine roar??? or does it sputter and act like it might stall and struggle what does the tac say?

Another possible contributor:
How old is the fuel?
Is it a Non-ethanol fuel?
Our 270 had a surprise tank of ethanol fuel from our marina. It separated over a few weeks and she lost all power. Ran great with no load, rev'd up smooth etc..

sorry just saw ur post that it boggs
I had that issue a while back. check the line that goes into ur carburator there is a filter. should just be a screen mine was clogged with varinish. also dump ur water seperator in a glass jar. see if u still have any water in it.

There are a hundred things it could be but if it is sputtering when you try to open up the throttle your fuel delivery system would be where I would start. Fuel pressure will tell you a lot. In the line just before the carb. you need to install a pressure gauge to see what you fuel pressure is. It should be around 5 psi. If the carb has a filter built into it change it to eliminate it as a problem. Auto Zone has a tool loaner you will need . From your fuel tank to the carb you will need to check the pick up tube in the tank and the fuel line (if it is a old fuel hose it could be deteriorating from the inside but not leaking) Anti siphoning valve (usually right on top of fuel tank inline with main fuel line) in most cases canister filter and water separator, fuel pump and finally the carb itself. For starters if you have a canister type separator remove it cut it apart and take a look at the filter paper this will tell you whats in your tank . It's not the big particles but the fine silt that plugs your filter.
