Bought my first boat this year and I guess I did it all wrong .I could really kick myself in the butt!:smt021 My wife and i knew it needed some work but where assured by the salesperson it was in good mechanical condition. This guy just boldface lied to us !Hard lesson learned ,luckily we found a local mercruiser mechanic who's really helped us out ,there's still good people out there.Oh well with his help we hope to be out on the water this season just not going as far down the Choptank as we hoped.

Boats are funny. You could park one in perfect mechanical condition. Come back to it three month later. And you have numerous mechanical issues with it:huh:

My boat was listed as in perfect condition.
Owner was suppose to be some rich guy that keeps all his stuff in perfect shape. He even put in a new refer so that everything worked for who ever was going to buy it.

Turns out, Bad prop seals, A pitted drive gear, leaky water pump. And the float stuck on the carb 4th time out.

Welcome to boating. :smt021 :smt043

Welcome, I have learned a lot here. I have a 85 weekender that I bought this winter. I resealed the lower end put a new water pump in it. Took it to the water a mounth ago and every thing worked great. Good Luck George

Haaaa Haaaaa haaaaaaaaaa.

Mine too was supposed to be in great shape as it was spottless. Two weeks later I had to get a new 5.7 Mercruiser. $5500.00. My fault for not waiting to take it for a test drive. Lesson learned....

Welcome, I used to have the same boat. It's a great boat. You won't find another 23 footer that rides as well, and handles well too. We really enjoyed ours. About the repairs,

Well we thought we had everything fixed, backed down the ramp with my mechanic for a sea trial and as he turns the key we hear a loud noise. He Says that's not good I hope it's not what I think it is! Yea it is the motor is hydro-locked :smt013. pull the boat back to his place and get the water out of the motor. Now he thinks it's a cracked riser or manifold [bring out another thousand]:smt009.He orders the parts but while he's waiting he pulls the heads that's when we find clogged water jackets and blown head gasket:smt100. At this point I don't think we will get on the water this year.I know survey or at least sea trial with mechanic.

Sorry for your misfortune. There is no monetary reason you can't be on the water in a few weeks. I know it's hard dropping money into a new boat, but you'll know what you're starting with if you drop in a reman block or new engine.

Got my 1986 268 in september 08. New engine with 0 hours, New gimble housing, new batteries, rebuilt outdrive, no sea trial (mistake, PO saw me coming). Two weeks later, never had it out and was running it on the muffs everything sounded fine. Checked the oil and the oil level went up, that must be good, an engine that makes oil instead of burning it. Not good. New engine, temp sender, oil sender, FWC (up grade), two bilge pumps and float switchs, various electrical issues, one battery, alternator, water pump, water circ pump, gauges, other stuff I just can't remember right now, and hours and hours of my labor. Not to mention what it all costs. Wow venting feels good. About a week away from splashing it. I hope mine doesn't go to s*#T the first time out. Best of luck with yours:thumbsup:. As long as your wife is still on your side it's all good.

I purchased my Weekender in 2007. The test run was an adventure....

Despite my verbal reservations the agent insisted that there was plenty of fuel in the tank to allow a decent trial. There wasn't....

However, having ran out of fuel, been towed back to the fuel berth and puttting the £20 worth of fuel that they should have done in the first place, I was quite pleased.

The boat simply refused point blank to accelerate..blocked fuel lines being the considered culprit we agreed to repeat the trial a week later.

Three months later the boat had a new block plus loads of other engine related items. It cost £6000 to repair - which I guess was a lucky escape for me.

That said, 18 months later, I now have milky oil....

Boat Ownership it seems is directly linked to your bank balance.

Boat 1, Bank Nil.

Still worth it though.

Regards from Norfolk Broads where 6 mph is considered fast (but my speedo doesn't start until 15...)

Andrew.

Well we are pulling the motor tomorrow for the rebuild at a local machine shop.My wife called the old owner and told him about all the problems we are having with the boat .He said he had a spare out drive for it that we could have.So were plugging away at it hope to be in the water mid July.
