My son is looking at the following schools and would like to visit this summer....I would like to take the boat...Any advice on Marina best suited to walk or take cab to these three (3) schools?

Manhattan College

NYU

Fordham University

John Manhattan College is all the way up Manhattan in Morningside Heights, Fordham is in the Bronx and NYU is in lower Manhattan in the Village. There's a Marina on the Lower West Side called North Cove Marina. I'm sure it's Pricey but sort of near NYU and you have Subway access to the other schools.

I would go to Liberty Landing in Jersey City... The waterway boat leaves from the marina to Manhaton. LLM is the nicest and safest marina, and best protected harbor in the NYC area.

I don't know how long you plan on staying, but if it will be a while, there is the 79th street boat basin. They have slips that may be a bit less. With the subways, getting around shouldn't be a problem. Liberty Landing is a good choice too.

Trust me I grew up on the Upper West Side... you don't want to stay at the 79th St. Boat Basin. First of all it's a Dump, 2nd you'll never get any Sleep because of the Boat traffic and forget it if there's any Bad Weather. Then there's the Unwanted Visitors to Worry About!!

I've been boating in the area for over 10 years. Unfortunately there are few options on Manhattan Island itself. East side has nothing. West side has: (1) 79th St boat basin (rough, shallow, bit of a dump, not too convenient to mass transportation) (2) Chelsea Piers just below the golf driving range is pretty convenient but can also be rough and a bit pricey. (3) North Cove Marina in Battery Park City (beautiful, convenient, super expensive, little rough). On the NJ side, Liberty Landing is a great option with ferry service to the city. Lincoln Harbor in Weehawken has ferry service as well. Further north in Edgewater, NJ there is Edgewater Marina that has ferry service but the schedule includes rush hour only. Feel free to ask any specifics that you may have.

John,

AS others said, from my experience there's nothing on the NYC side that will provide comfortable sleep. The North Cove looks protected but the wake from boating traffic will wake you up at 5am. The same is for 23rd street. I'd say that LLM or Lincoln Harbor is much better. LLM is reasonably priced and very protected. The ferry is right there in your front door ($7 p/p). Just don't forget that it has last run about 7:45pm from the city.

Liberty Harbor Marina (as opposed to Liberty Landing Marina) is my homeport, and while not nearly as nice a facility as Liberty Landing, you have 24/7 access to Manhattan via the PATH subway...versus being very much isolated in Liberty Landing after 7:00 pm.

Jon...My son is setting up interviews now......He has one interview with Columbia records on the 6th so we are working around that

John, I will be at Liberty Landing July 28th, 29th, and also August 5th. Let me know if my dates match yours.

I would recommend Libert Landing. I have stayed at other marinas on both sides of the Hudson and LLM was the nicest and most protected marina. Ferries run frequently back nd forth to the city.
My boat took a bit of a beating on the Manhattan side. Strong currents, debris and poor marina conditions were the culprits.
