Boat Info
1988 Searay 16br, shorelander trailer, Searay 100 outboard motor
Engines
100hp Searay
My son just purchased a 1988 Sea Ray 16br open bow with a 100hp Sea Ray motor and Shoreland'r trailer. Got it all for $400. Naturally, its my job to check it out to make sure everything works and is in good condition.
The boat itself is in pretty good condition just needing the cushions redone sometime. I need to get rid of the oxidation on the blue color of the boat but don't know which product to use yet. I need to check out the bilge pump and blower if it has one.

The motor is stuck in the up position and I have been told the up and down trim/tilt solenoids have been replaced already by the previous owner who is a friend of my son's. I need to figure this little problem and will do a lot of research before tackling.

The trailer is in great condition but I think I will replace the strap on the winch and also the wiring to the tail lights since it is over 25 yrs old. Must take a good look at the tires also and check the bearings.

I need to find a good copy of the original owner's manual for the boat to explain everything about it.

I'm open to all suggestions and advice since I am new to the sport. Thanks for any help. Gary Vancouver, Wa.

Welcome and congrats! I've never owned a outboard but I've seen some with a locking pin to hold the motor up during trailer time, I would also take a volt meter and be sure they are getting power, it could be just a blow fuse. Most manuals can be found on the Sea Ray website. I wish you and your son the best of luck and safe boating!

Thanks for the info. Even though I'm over the age(62 this year) required get a boater's license I'm going to take a boating class just to be trained sufficiently. Thanks for all the help. Now off to figure out why the motor is stuck in the up position. Thanks again, Gary Vancouver, Wa.:smt038

You might want to check and see you to have a "tilt support lever". The outboard on my Whaler has one not sure if yours would or not. This is a lever that you flip up when the motor is lifted all the way up then lower the motor a couple inches down on this lever. It lets the outboard rest on this so the trim system does not have to support it during storage and transport. If this is engaged you will not be able to put the outboard down. To disengage, trim outboard all the way up then release bracket and lower trim. (not sure how yours would work if equipped). Mine you press in and rotate knob.

When you work the trim controls do you hear anything at all?

Sounds like a good deal if the transom is solid. If you got a $400.00 boat on a trailer with a good transom go buy a lotto ticket. Got any pictures?

The lever is not engaged to hold the motor in the up position. The original battery was low so I charged it back up but have not hooked it back up so I haven't tested any of the switches yet. The previous owner did rewire the fuses on the console though by putting automotive blade fuses behind the console because he did not like the original style panel mount fuse arrangement. I will get all new panel mount fuses and put it back to the original arrangement. The previous owner also mentioned to my son that he had replaced the up and down solenoids already but I will check them out and also to hear if the trim motor is making any noise at all. My daughter is getting me the Seloc book for the motor. I also have a black crimped/damaged hose going to the lower unit opposite the propeller. How do I find out what size it is and find a replacement for it? :smt100 Hey I just thought about this topic I'm going over. Shouldn't it be in another category? I'm sorry about putting it in the wrong area and getting off track on the original thought of being new to boating. I can just type it into another location if anyone here wants me to do that. Thanks for everyone's suggestions up till now anyway. Gary H. Vancouver, Wa.

Gary,

Pictures, need pictures. Can't imagine what the black hose is. Pictures may solve that though.

Here's some pics. Looks like the previous owner pinched the hose in two spots. I tried to add the photos but they were too large to post. I'll retake them in a while. Gary

Just put them in photobucket and add a link to your post.

here's a pic. Is the black hose just for the speedometer??? It is crushed flat in two spots. Anyone know the specs of the hose?? Or should I just buy a pitot tubing kit? Gary H.

Don't know what the "brown slobber" is. I think it has hydraulic steering so I'll have to check all the hoses, etc. I do know the 2 stroke oil tank is leaking or it may be a hose. I'll have to fix that soon. Also, after I loosened up the tilt valve plug and retightened it, the motor must have slowly came down in the last week. A friend of mine who has the same boat is getting rid of his cushions and is going to sell them to me. We just have to agree on a price. Also have to get a top for it since the old top is real brittle and the supports have a crack in the plastic parts. Aren't boats fun???? I did buy a Seloc manual for it and my friend had the original manual for the boat and motor so I made copies of each. Also found out what model of Shoreland'r it is so I can order some replacement lights and side markers. Thanks for everyone's help so far. GaryH. Vancouver, Wa.
