So marina just out emailed about new high speed fuel pumps, gas and diesel at up to 60gpm. Read an article on the internet about this, and the quote I found was this: “A vessel’s ability to receive high speed fueling through its fill pipe is limited by the boat’s vent size. Air has to be capable of venting out at the same speed fuel is being pumped in.”
So, I’m assuming this is not your standard pump, and how big are the vents on my Sea Ray 320? 10gpm, 30gpm? I have 2 100 gallon tanks, and putting 60 gallons per tank takes at least 10 minutes it seems (maybe 20?), but I’m always wary of back splash and getting fuel all over the place, so I never hold it all the way down. How do these things work?

We carry 400 gallons (2x200). We are up in British Columbia 2 years ago putting on fuel and the attendant recommends the high flow to me. I started fueling the boat and all of a sudden, I've got backsplash fuel everywhere. The attendant gets fuel diapers to mop up the mess and then they add $20 to my fuel bill... Be careful !

We take diesel up to 60gpm, but these pumps have a valve that serves to throttle the flow, so you can choose to fill at 30 or 40 GMP if that’s all you can handle.

We start the flow slower and build up to the higher flow to avoid the whoosh of air out the vents. We also have two fills And two vents for each tank so can open the other fill to have a much bigger venting capacity.

When you first use the pump, try to fill at 20gpm. If you are able to handle it, go to 30 and so on. If at any point you start to hear gurgling or get drips out the vent, stop and go back to the lower rate. From then on you will be able to pull-up to that 60 gpm pump and confidently tell the attendant that you can handle x gpm.

Our marina made the same improvement after the last hurricane that damaged the fuel pumps. The new pumps installed here are 2 speed pumps so we can ask the dock hand manning the pumps to slow the delivery if needed. I do that after I am about 2/3 full of diesel and it saves spilling fuel out of the vent lines.

You might ask the dock master there if he has the ability to slow the pumps down on demand for slower delivery.

The dock has 2 sets of pumps, only one diesel, and that one has been down for a month or so, so they brought in a fuel truck for diesel. So I guess they made the same decision, replace with high speed rather than just an equivalent. I’m eager to try it out, but wish there was an easy way to prevent fuel spills, I normally only fill up 3/4, unless it’s a big cruise I’m taking.

boat with2 inch fills and 1nch vents... I would say 65 ft and up
the Sport Fish boys that take 1500-10000 Gallons need this....
our 410 fills pretty quick on the regular speed pump
