New Canvas

I was just received a quote for $4750 for the Bimini in both the front and rear of the arch, the 3 pieces of isenglass across the front, the isenglass on each side, and the aft curtain, (replacing the current set up). I too thought the price was high, if I could get this done for $2300 I would have already wrote the check. I contacted Great Lakes and they no longer have the pattern for my old girl. I did see complete canvas packages in the internet for around $2000, however I believe the canvas does not come with the snap in place, the canvas needs to be fit and the snaps installed. Anyone have any luck with this? I have seen them install snaps (I have the Tool) it does not look that difficult. Seems a little risky...

Marshal, I thought SeaRay offered one on the 310's... If so, call Great Lakes, ask for Kelly and you should be able to get one for about half the price you were quoted... Another option is a fastback from Taylor Made... This is what it looks like

BTW, I can help you with the install... I have a professional installation tool...

I do think you'd need to add side braces further out on the hoop or it would cause the whole thing to flop up and down while underway. I am seriously thinking about this for a winter project. You could use cheap bedsheets to prototype the pattern and once you had that down, you'd cut the Sunbrella. You would need a sewing machine capable of working with canvas, but even with that expense, I still think a lot of money could be saved.

Don't mean to high-jack Bugsy's thread but a few of you were asking about extending the aft Bimini. Here is a picture of Bounty's boat where he did it with no extra supports attached to the aft bimini.

Frank Webster also has custom canvas on his 450 and you see how he supports his rear extension in this picture.

Is that fastback supported / held outward by flexible "tent" poles like you would use in an igloo shaped tent? A friend of mine had a similar setup on his Chaparral and it worked, but collapsed a lot on him in different wind/rain conditions. He ended up removing it and just using a cockpit cover most of the time. That said, he mostly used the boat for day trips and fair weather, so the need for a full camper style canvas wasnt a priority for him.

Thanks for all the Input People!! I'm thinking that I'll wait till the Canvas Guy's are Hungry... that should be about Nov. or Dec. up here!! In this economy that's just too Expensive! I ordered the Anchor Shade and that'll take care of my Sun Problem when we're on the Hook or at the Dock!
Rod... thanks, you are a Proffesional... you have the Tool!

BTW that fastback would make my Boat look like a "Lady Bug"!

How Ironic. I was getting ready to ask the same question. I have a 1999 340 DA Sundancer and was going to ask as to where I can find a full camper enclosure. Sounds as if Great Lakes is the best place to begin a search.

Call them.. they don't answer Emails very well! If a Camperback was offered as an option on your boat and they still have the Pattern you should be allright!

Marshall,

As with anything, shop around. Take your time to come up with best design for your needs. Search the board, we had several detailed discussions on this that includes lots of ideas and pics. Make another attempt off season and I'm sure you'll save good chunk of money.

Good luck,
Alex.

One way to extend the life of this precious commodity is leave it off April, May until you REALLY need it and take it off after the hot months are gone and you are using the boat a bit less frequently (sept, oct). Invest in a cockpit cover for around $800. Well worth it.

Yep... I boat every weekend during our short 5 month season. I use the cockpit cover when I put up most of the time. If its raining when I come in, I will leave the canvas up.

It's actually the MY (Motor Yacht) series that looks like a tennis shoe...

I played that game with cushions I wanted covered. When told the price in October I began to reload them, The manager said: "let me look at them and I'll see what I can do". I told my wife the first guy to call loses, and I didn't need them until May. The call came December 12th, less than half the original estimate. They were done in a week. MM

PS If your canvas is good could the velcro, glass, and broken zippers be replaced for less than new and still be functional? I just did that with a road cover for the Monaco, the cover was falling apart but the fabric was good. The thread was dry rotted. and they had it resewn. It looks like new now that I waterproofed it.
