Need info on Fire Island Inlet.

Steve, I'm running Navionics on the pad , just before i departed Newport i hit the "track" button and didnt touch it for two days.as a matter of fact i forgot and it was tracking our truck all over long islamd for a day while it was in my ditch bag.so my route was all over the. Place!!!! The only thing i noticed was if you zoom in or out you have to hit the "gps" button to find the ship again . Are you running a nav app?

Yes, running the Navionics app but the GPS doen't seem to be working. I'm thinking its a problem with the pad as it doesnn't seem to track the "land" mapas that came preinstalled

Obviously your gps isnt working , im assuming its 3g/ wifi? Will it find you using google maps?

Joe,
The gps will find my location if I'm at a stationary new location but will not track. It is not 3G but did not think I needed that for tracking. I have a 4g hot spot on my phone and I tried that also and no difference.

Hmmm, steve i cant imagine why, how about under "location services" is the app on?

Here's the reason. Not to happy as I had the 3G model and returned it because my Phone has 4G and as per the guy at the verizon store, he said use a hot spot on your phone to connect because its 4G, not knowing the unit is missing hardware for GPS

[h=1]Does the iPad have GPS / Location Services?[/h]Only the Wi-Fi + 3G models have assisted GPS (Global Positioning System) to facilitate Location Services. Assisted GPS works by using location information from the AT&T data network to speed up the acquisition of GPS satellites. Many apps use a GPS receiver to determine where the iPad is located.
So far, 40 applications have been certified by Apple as iPad 3G-only compatible.
Wi-Fi only models include a digital compass, but lack the internal hardware to pick up radio signals from GPS satellites and land-based cell towers.

Steve, you have two perfectly operational MFDs. Did you need this new headache?...JK my friend. Those toys, they always keep us busy, don't they?

Yes.... And very frustrating at times.... Thought I did my homework but I guess I was focused on the wifi and not the gps capability. Fortunately, there are ways to use an external gps receiver, weather it be a smart phone or a plug-in receiver. Hopefully, this info helps someone considering buying and iPad for navigation.. Probably should have its own thread.

I bought an external gps reciever for my macbook air and bought the Polar View software.
Very happy.....works great

I use the navionics app and my iPad as my sole GPS since I don't have one installed on my boat. My iPad is the wifi model only as well. Here is what I use and it works great! I have even tested this navigating in the car and in the airplane and both work great!

And I use this mount which is incredibly good!

M&M,

Thanks for the info... How difficult is it to set up? I'm assuming it uses bluetooth. After the initial setup, is it as simple as turning it on?

It's actually that simple! Turn on the Bluetooth gps, pair it via Bluetooth with your iPad. Open up Navionics and it works! A free app is available to monitor the satellite signals so wait until you acquire signals before using navionics app. It's usually very quick though. One charge of the gps can last a very long time according to the reviews. I've used it at 2 hr clips, 4 hrs in total in a few different days and never had any issues with the gps battery. One thing I did have to do was turn off the auto lock to never so the screen doesn't lock while navigating.

Heres the seasucker mount , i can move it around the boat. Here i put it in the cockpit to have control of my music
