I'm traveling to Newport RI to bring our new boat home on Sat 12 th.
I was planning to enter the FI inlet but my estimate time of arrival puts me there at low tide( around. 7pm) does anyone have first hand knowledge of the conditions this year ? Or maybe enter through Morichs??

Joe, the issue with Moriches Inlet is that it was officially considered as non-navigable. If the official status hasn't change, if something goes wrong your insurance will not cover you. I think I spoke to Moriches CG last year and they said that the inlet is fine and could be even better than FI. I have no idea how it is this year. However, unless you find the official status of MI and get the "green light" from Moriches CG in writing I wouldn't risk it. This is my conservative position.

BTW, if I recall, Brian mentioned some time ago that his insurance specifically excludes coverage for Moriches. You can verify it with him.

I wasn't crazy about the idea of using Morichs however, at 7pm sat FI. Will be at low tide and I'm not sure of the conditions there.i don't want to sit in the Atlantic for 1 1/2 hrs for some water to show up :smt101 I'm looking for answers or another route.

Just call local SeaTow and CG for last reports on depths in FI inlet and their suggestions.

That is a good tip. I did that a few years ago when we went to Fire Island. Sea Tow was very helpful. I didn't call the CG.

Joe,

If you a SeaTow member I think they can even escort you through the inlet if you wish to. As far as I recall this is one of the benefits your yearly membership provides. If you're not comfortable about being there at the low tide, just ask them to provide an escort. Coordinate your ETA to the inlet and they should be able to assist.

Joe,
The charter boats [fishing and booze cruise] from Captree run the inlet. Can always look at their schedule and follow one in.
Or call them and get some local additional intel.

Alex, I'm a tow boaters member not sea tow but I will try contacting the others good idea,
Tim, it's a 2007 36Db. I'm bringing from Newport RI to South shore LI.

I chaperoned my son's class trip on a party boat out of Captree today. The one we were on and at least 7 other party boats were drifting the inlet. I didn't have a depth finder to look at, but judging from the line I let out all day with a fluke rig I would say that you should have no problmes if you follow the buoys.

I believe your correct I just got off the phone with Coast Guard station Fire Island. And he said with my draft at low tide if I stick to the bouys I'll be fine.

LAst Month we came tru FI on a buddys new 45C silverton. The buoys were moved closer to the beach but we had pleanty of water under the boat all times. Its very well marked. But again the buoys are very close to the beach.

Yeah Rob, i came through on Sunday you did have to head North towards the beach but all was fine thanks

i know this is late but this could help in the future.

Important changes to Fire Island Inlet!

Tuesday, April 3, 2012
Fire Island Inlet has been remarked! Buoy numbers 1, 2, and 3 are at the same locations as last year. Red buoy #4 however is more east than last year and very close to the beach (only about 25 yards off). There is also a new Red buoy #4A that acts as a gate with Green Buoy #5. It is pretty narrow, (maybe 15 yards between #4A and #5) and #4A is just behind #4 and real close to the beach. So, on your way inside the inlet coming thru #4A and #5, leave the #6 buoy slightly to starboard then head about 25 yards to the west of buoy #6. Once you are passed the #6 buoy then dog leg to the east to get inside like always. Although things are a little tighter this year (between #4a and #5), it seems that the depths are greater in the channel. As long as you stay within the buoys you should not encounter depths of less than 8ft. As always, things can change over time (especially the location and size of sand bars), but as of 4/3/12 these are our observations. We will do our best to update Fire Island Inlet conditions as they change.

Ran it today...... No problem with depth...... Lowest reading was about 10'.....hour and a half past high tide. Follow the buoys and there is no worries......

Joe.. I tried using my iPad with the navionics app and no luck with it tracking the vessel....I checked all the settings and everything seems ok .. Wondering if I have a problem with my iPad..... Once I got to my destination it eventually showed my location but wouldn't track my position as I was cruising. Am I missing something as you said you used it for navigation on your trip?

Steve, I'm running Navionics on the pad , just before i departed Newport i hit the "track" button and didnt touch it for two days.as a matter of fact i forgot and it was tracking our truck all over long islamd for a day while it was in my ditch bag.so my route was all over the. Place!!!! The only thing i noticed was if you zoom in or out you have to hit the "gps" button to find the ship again . Are you running a nav app?
