Hello folks,

I bought a 1988 270DA a couple of weeks ago and the previous owner took out the transom seating and used two big folding chairs. While this is fine when you have just a couple of people on board it is a little awkward with a few more people.

The PO did save the cushions and they are in great condition with no holes but I need to know how to set it up. I have one long, thin pad that I believe gets fastened with domes to the vertical surface of the transom but I do not have a frame of any sort for the seat cushions.

If anyone could post a picture of their set up I would be very grateful. It will give me a starting point.

Cheers,

Mike

I am guessing the door/bench bottom is missing on yours and it's just the fiberglass recess exposed right now.

This may help:
First two pictures are from our 270 - you can see the corners of what would be the bench bottom.
A door with a piano hinge along the bottom that folds down. It originally had short support legs that slid on when used.
We now use it as a storage area.

The bottom picture is from "Pachanga Boy's" 270 - In his photo the wood framed panel with the cushion (tool box sitting on) is what folds down.
The long cushion would slide off the door and be placed on the transom when folded down as a back rest.
The brackets the cushion were slid into on the door were then used for the short legs.
The leg brackets were the same plastic ones used for your typical removable drink holders of the time. (at least on ours)
You can see the piano hinge along the bottom.

As soon as it stops raining (hasn't rained in months till today) I'll take and post some photos of the transom layout in my '87 - 270 - Amberjack. The back rest flips up and a bench folds down from behind resting on to two folding legs. It's a squaty little seat but better than nothing I guess.

I'm in the process of reworking several things on this boat including the seating - replacing the helm and co pilots lounge - with something that swivels around to face the stern for entertaining. We never use the lounge. Not sure what I'm gonna do with the bench - don't want to stray too far from the original set up.

(yes, I'm replacing the port lites, frame missing in sig pic. shes getting paint too!)

Here you go. Transom layout for an '87 SR 270 Amberjack. -- As far as I can tell- this is original. Your DA may not have been configured the same as the AJ, but its likely - I think both were built in Knoxville and the layouts similar. Anyway - hopes this helps - there are several similar boats being parted out on the forum - might get lucky and find at least a pattern! Major difference - AJ has a 10' beam.

Stored position, back was recovered by PO ... going to recover the front seats and will have this redone to match the off white/maroon original color scheme.

Bench lifted up - propped on table stand for the photo!

Bench lowered into seating position - legs extended. Bench height off the floor is about 10" - a little low for us old farts with bad knees - but just right for the kids (with PFD's!)

Bench lifted to show legs extended. (sorry for the dirt - never park your boat near a Pecan tree - even covered)

Sorry for dupes - still learning how to manage pix on this forum

If you need some of the legs I have 2

Thank you all for the photos. I have all the cushions but don't seem to have the platform. I don't think that it was even there as I can't find any holes from where the screws would be. The previous owner created a base that is higher than the ones in your pictures and when I installed it it was quite comfortable. The only problem that I have is that if I have to get to the engines then I have to disassemble the whole thing. More of an inconvenience than a problem.

The big open deck is a design feature of this era boat that I really like, one of the reasons I keep plowing money into this "hole in the water"! We do a little diving too, and having that big open deck gives everyone room to suit up and buddy check, without tripping over each other.

The fold up bench seat helps preserve the openness. The bench is attached with a long piano hinge to the top edge of the box you can see as the vertical surface at the edge of the engine room hatches. I suspect your original rear support box rotted away and was removed - I suspect mine is rotten too - but not obvious because we don't use it much. When we have guest on the boat, we have a couple of low beach chairs we put out on the deck - (safer than a regular height deck chair) - but a hassle to pull them out of the hold. I've removed the original lounge and helm seats and am in the process of re-enforcing the deck to support pedestals & swivels for the replacements - while I'm at it, I think I will rebuild the bench support box if it is deed damaged. Also intend to add a "jump" seat slightly behind and between the two front seats, hope to mount it such a way as to allow either the jump seat or the dinette table to use the same floor mount.

Good luck with your boat don't hesitate to ask for what ever details you need -lot of good info available on this forum.
