Nantucket / Vineyard - Recommended Marinas

Definitely go for Black Dog Wharf in Vineyard Haven. Nice, relaxed atmosphere, but still a fun, beautiful place.

Also, Edgartown is the ideal place to grab a mooring (although reservations go quick I think).

Good luck!

I just checked Edgartown Harbormaster site and August is available right now. We'll be booking our stays this weekend; really excited to get back on the ocean.

Thanks all for the great tips, pointers and guidance.

In 2007 we logged nearly 500 miles during our 2 week trip; it was in late June and the weather was not very good. This time we're taking things easier, staying in fewer places longer, and going later in the season.

Cheers
Jeff

Ok, we will definitely avoid that situation!

Cutty Hunk is a great place to grab a mooring; sounds like Oak Bluffs is not.
OB is fine, have been going there for quite a few years and have met some really nice people that either I have rafted up to or vice versa. I have never had a problem. OB is a big party, which is fun, but can be a little noisy. The islands offer something for everyone. Really could use a drink, sitting on the dock at Nancy's right now! (blowing snow and 30deg. outside right now!)

Great! That sounds good.

Also, in addition to the current in Edgartown (caused by water suddenly being able to enter Edgartown Harbor/Katama Bay from the unprotected waters...with thousands of miles of fetch.. on the South side of the Vineyard), keep a look out for the huge sand bar before entering the harbor. Don't be afraid of the current though, it doesn't keep us away, and it's not usually TOO TOO bad.

Anyway... the sand bar... just take extra care coming into Edgartown Harbor because there is a very deceiving sand bar that extends pretty far out from Edgartown Lighthouse (maybe a mile or so). So if you're coming from the Woods Hole/Falmouth/OB direction, aim straight for the cliffs at Cape Poge, then you'll be able to start turning right into a marked channel toward the lighthouse. Not as tricky as it sounds, but just beware. Check the charts/GPS, and even if you look at Google Maps/Earth (Satellite view), the change in water color is very pronounced.

Good luck, it'll be a great trip.
