I need to paint a name on my boat. Any tips on prepping the gel coat and on what type of paint to use?

I suppose you are opposed to vinyl? You can do multiple colors in vinyl, and install yourself.

Welcome to CSR!

I went on Boat US and was tooling around with their vinyl lettering design program but would prefer to paint the name on. I'm having a stencil made up.

Thanks for the welcome!

That's two for vinyl. The previous name was painted on an it looked good so i figured i would go the paint route.

I wouldn't paint in any circumstances. Vinyl keeps its color and lasts for years. Plus it can be designed professionally by drawings you provide.

Add my vote to vinyl.

Vinyl It's meant for boat lettering. Lasts, lots of choices in fonts. You can approve it before you buy.

You guys are doing a good job of swaying me to vinyl. I'll look into that now. Thanks for the input.

placed the order for high performace black vinyl lettering. Thanks again for your responses.

Not to mention if you sell the boat, it's easier to change the name.

Both of my boats I used vinyl, Works great.

Go for vinyl. Thats the way to do it.

Scoyager if you're going to do paint, get an artist to airbrush it and then spray it with clear coat. (costs more then vinyl)

The name on my boat is painted on and I would never do it again. I was tempted to take it off this Spring and replace it with vinyl, but my wife touched it up and told me I wanted to keep it. It's a PIA to maintain, and don't go near it with a cleaner wax, polish, buffing machine, or anything else that will smear it.
Go for the Vinyl

Good call..here is multi colored printed vinyl with laminate over top.

I have had names both ways and prefer the vinyl. Like others have said it can be easily changed or repaired and holds up better to cleaning and polishing.
Artwork done on printed vinyl does not last as long as premium vinyl in multiple colors.
Below is the name I personally replaced on our boat using multiple colors of vinyl:

The new graphics and logo I created by cutting and layering (8) different colors - it is not printed.

The crossed out name was a printed vinyl decal put on by the P.O. that I removed.

I was thinking about doing the "shadow" style lettering especially after seeing what you guys have but decided to stay simple and went with the high performance black. I picked it up today and will post a picture when it's on. Looking forward to launching on Sunday morning but i think i'll have to cover the name up until i can schedule a renaming ceremony. I don't want to upset the gods that rule the elements!

Here's ours. Custom designed and installed last year. Two colours on 2 pieces of vinyl.
