Hi all, I have been wanting to change the name on our boat, we bought it last fall....now i do know the superstitions that go with that, and read the procedure from boatsafe if one decides to do it....have many people changed their names?

I changed my boats name. It was "Priceless", and I hate those mastercard commercials. I don't have a superstitious bone in my body, but for fun we performed the ceremony and changed the name. Nothing bad has happened yet! :)

I changed mine and although I'm a little superstitious I don't think that "bad" boats happen by themselves.
I say change it... Make it yours.

Go ahead and change it and go through the ceremony!
I bought mine as a 'repo'.
PO had taken the original name off of the stern and was in the process of renaming it.
Trying to hide it from the repo man!

Still have the graphics if anybody wants them.
"BLOND MOMENT" and they look pretty good too!

Decided to go ahead with my original name and never looked back!
Dan

Go ahead and rename her, but be sure to do the ceremony. No cheap booze, either.

(He boats in Toronto. What are the chances of him having a disaster in the Chesapeake? I'm safe. I think...)

I bought mine from a broker and had the existing graphics removed. Then I had a stroke of genious... I let my wife name her and she came up with Temptress. I thought it was perfect, and the cool thing was she now felt like it was "our" boat. We went through the ceremony to seal the deal. It was a blast! Then it was on to vinyl letter shopping online to find the perfect font and color combo! I have to admit, since renaming her, I went from felling like we were taking ownership of someone elses boat to feeing like we just added a new member to our family.

Rename her for Pete's sake. I don't know who Pete is, but do it. Make sure you use good champagne! But only a little on the bow, the rest is for you.

I went with cheap champagne on our 240 and the engine blew. When we bought our 280 it did not have a name on it but we knew it did and went through it anyways. This time we bought better champagne and more of it.

When I sold my last boat I performed the ceremoney using a heat gun and a wool pad. Pity the next owner.

It's ok to change the name as long as you use as many of the same letters as possible. My boat's original name was "My Addiction". I used an anagram generator on the internet to rearrange all the letters. I finally ended up with "Tiny Dancer". I used all but two of the letters. So far so good.

I am supersticious, but I leave the dock on most Fridays.....If you just bought the boat, change it to what you want....I was thinking about changing the name on my boat, however, I have had it for 10 plus years and I have worked too hard at know people at marinas and tipping them.....They know the name and it helps when they have little to no dock space left....

beerman ...that's funny (now, not when the eng. blew) Glad you learned your lesson the second time aroun Ric

I removed the PO's name and town before the boat went into storage for the winter. However, my wife came up with the new name and I thought it was cool to and sent a PowerPoint graphic to a local graphic person to create the decal and new registration numbers to put on the boat after its Spring splash. In fact I was looking at champagne brands over the weekend for appeasing the gods. I am not sure if its bad luck to I reveal the new name on this forum before the ceremony. But martinis "shaken but not stirred" might be more appropriately served than champagne but I don't know which Neptune prefers. But the old name was "Otrucs" which was the company that the PO owned.

Isn't there something said about a virgin peeing off the bow too ??. Good luck at finding one !!. :smt043 . :smt043 .
You're DOOMED sell the boat.

Is this the ceremony? I contacted a recommended boat painter and opened my wallet, one hour it was the old name and a couple hours later it was "Pseudomind." The payment cleared, (I guess) as the painter did not remove my newly painted lettering so I guess the demons were appeased. :smt043:smt043:smt043

Mine was not named. The Wife named her "Compromise" as this was a compromise. I can fish off her in the "off" season and she can enjoy her beauty during the summer. When I got her back from the lettering shop we had a neighborhood party to admire the lettering. Really just an excuse to socialize. No boat problems after that. The boat was happy to really be a part of the family.
Rename yours. They know when they are being loved and will return it back to you.

I'm not superstitious, but have done the ceremony twice. Last boat I was told by friends to do the ceremony. I said, bah Humbug. Went out on the water and had three bad things happen. Next weekend did the ceremony and had three good years on the water with her.

This boat, did the ceremony before leaving the dock!

Use good champagne! It's not worth the risk!

Did you do "the ceremony" when gioving her a name? Our is new-to-us and has never been named. We are going to name her, but since it's her first name, should we do the ceremony? I guess it couldn't hurt.
