Name Change, do or dont?

Did you do "the ceremony" when gioving her a name? Our is new-to-us and has never been named. We are going to name her, but since it's her first name, should we do the ceremony? I guess it couldn't hurt.

Rono - The boat I just purchased over the winter has never been named either and we are going full steam ahead with the ceremony. How many times in our lives are we going to have a boat naming ceremony/christening. I cant wait.

Same here--I read that if we have to put the new name on prior to the ceremony then it should be covered until after the first part of asking the Gods to remove the old name from the ledger.

Right - I dont see anyway around that. Its not like we will be able to put the new name on her once she's in the water so I guess we will need some sort of blanket to cover the name until the unveiling.

We had a ceremonious beer(or 2 or 3 or 4) while having her at the house and thinking up her name and how we wanted it to look. Sent her off to get it done and brought her back to the same spot and admired her new look with matching numbers.More ceremony beer. We are not champagne people and it would be disrespectful of the boat to put on airs so Miller lite is is.I'm a bit superstitious. Ceremonies can't do any harm and give you a bit more time with the boat. So far so good. Now with the 4 inches of snow we had last night, I'm headed to the marina to get it off the tarp.
Go for the ceremony. :)

The champagne is for Neptune not you so hopefully you won't get into an argument with him about "tastes great...no less filling."!!:smt043:smt043

Change it!

I've changed the name of at least 12 - 14 boats now... some peoples creativity when choosing a name... well... let's face it... it stinks and needs your help!
Here's a few things that I do, that maybe you should to successfully rename your latest pride and joy without having the god of the sea Neptune come and get you;

* Make sure there's not conflicting paperwork on board. If you're changing the name, you don't want the old name appearing anywhere... this could cause some hassle with an overzealous cop... and make Neptune angry and he will come and get you.

* Celebrate the new name and send off the previous one in style with a toast... because it's fun... and if you don't, Neptune will be angry again... he wants you to drink a fair amount too or he will come and get you.

* The worst violation I can think of... when you take the old vinyl off, wet sand and polish the area so you can't see the old name in the gelcoat under the new one... that looks cheap and ridiculous plus... Neptune will be very upset... and come and get you.

These few things have kept me happy and safe... and Neptune has never had to come and get me!

The bottom line is (imho) don't sweat the superstitions. People create their own luck and safety precautions are completely within your control.

Fair enough ... But what if you don't drink?!

You'll shrivel up and turn into a fine powder where the next gentle breeze will scatter your remains... oh wait... you mean alcohol... silly me.
I'm sure ginger ale or whatever your favorite celebratory quaff will satisfy Neptune

Neptune must like Miller lite because I have had smooth waters ever since I named the boat. But, we have only been out a dozen times or so since then. I'll just have to keep paying the river every time we go out.

Ok, What is the ceremony??? Are we talking a champagne toast? I bought my boat last year and the name is "Sea ya later" not bad but not mine..... It is painted on. Whats the best way to remove it and then " appease the gods" ???

Sweet! Does anyone have video of this? It would be entertaining and interesting to see.

You should have used Miller High Life, it is the Champage of beers.

Holy Crap! Thanks Bob. I will need to do this early in the season so not to make a spectacle of myself in front of the masses! LOL! That being said, I will do it even though I am not superstitious. Can never be to safe with water and family mixing! :smt001

Amen to that! That's how I feel.

Try spraying on some Easy Off oven cleaner and then wiping if off with shop towells. Then rub it out with a wool pad and compound spinning at 1500rpms. You may have to wet sand a shadow. If so, compound and polish after that with a wheel. Wax it after you have the new name on it.
