I just completed year two of using my $35 cheap Harbor Freight rotary polishing tool on my boat.

Even if this tool does not work the next time I pick it up it owes me nothing. I am amazed how long this lightweight, inexpensive tool has lasted.

Hey, I lost some weight over winter, my old jeans are loose! I have a lot more weight loss to go but its progress.

I buy 7” Velcro wool pads, slap them on the tool using the centering tube and away I go. Most of the time I hold the tool so the right side of the pad has slightly more contact pressure. Since the pad rotates in a clockwise direction this technique helps pull the tool up so my arms do not get tired.

I wash and towel dry the fiberglass boat surface then use Meguiar's 49 with the rotary tool + wool pad. Each new area I start at a slow speed then as the product spreads out and starts to dry I increase the speed on the rotary tool. Next I towel off any remaining residue with a terry cloth towel then apply Meguiar's flagship wax by hand and towel off by hand.

The marina borrowed me a scaffold with wheels on the bottom. That helped eliminate a lot of up and down the ladder. When I needed to move to the next area I would set everything down on the scaffold, grab something on the boat like a cleat and pull myself along with the scaffold assembly to the next area. It was a real time saver.

Total time to clean the outside of the boat including the arch (not the canvas or any internal part of the boat or cockpit) with oxidation removal and two coats of wax was 30 hours.

Next up: clean the canvas and cockpit then treat the canvas with 303 fabric guard, treat the seats with protectant, commission the fresh water system, reinstall the cockpit carpet, load provisions then go boating.

I picked one up this past winter and I am planning to use it next weekend. My Porter Cable gave up the ghost. I decided if i am going to pay that much for wax might as well get a disposable unit.

Bought a HF buffer a few weeks ago. Will be using it in a few weeks.

$29 and another $10 for a 2 year warranty. HF told me to mark the date and bring it in before then for a new one. Buffers for 5 bucks a year. PRICELESS!

Nice! That scaffold looks like a real benefit! My feet were hurting from standing on a ladder as much as my arms were from holding the polisher. I'll be honest, I wish I had one of those $35 units from HF instead of the milwaukee unit I have. Its heavy and hard to get in tight spots. It has a tendency to "hop" if you don't control it well due to the weight. But it was a much appreciated gift. Even so, I didn't even use my portcable this year. I've found that it doesn't do the the cutting and polishing like a rotary and I don't find it that helpful to apply wax with it over by hand applications. I use to love the thing.

I wasn't too impressed with the PC 7424 either. There was such a buzz here about them that I bought one. Now I just throw a micro fiber cloth on a pad and use it for buffing the haze off. My granddaughter is able to handle it.

I wouldn't have expected a big Wisconsin union supporter to promote buying products made from cheap china labor camps...

My friend, how are you doing?

I work in the private sector. You know what I do and who I work for. My wife is a public school teacher plus we own a small business.

I’m not pro-union or anti-union. I recognize when someone is being treated fairly and when someone is not. I make up my own mind based on my own research.

I am on my third season with my HF rotary. I just bought a backup last week for $29 with a super coupon. I figure what the heck....for that price, if the first one bites the bullet, or if I drop it in the drink, I'll just open the box and continue on.....

+1
Same here.

I'm right there with you, Doug! I only have one season on mine, but I used it very extensively last year. Very happy!

Speaking of the rolling scaffold... What about a good set of stilts - anyone ever use these? I've been thinking real hard about picking up a pair. I never used anything other than the toy kind, though. The toy kind you can jump off of if you start to fall... the real ones you get strapped into - I don't think the landing would be very pretty if I fell!

Stilts and a spinning tool? ......oh with a long cord? Sounds like an injury waiting to happen.

Plus what do you do if you drop something:grin:

Looks great Doug!

I am on my 4th or 5th season with my HF buffer. It's still working great.

Doug

HF is great. I'm there a couple times a month.
The area our office is relocating to does not have one. Looks like the closest one is in Harrisburg an hour away. (It's worth the trip)

Yeah, maybe it's all for the best I've been hesitant to pull the trigger on this one!

Balance on one stilt while I pick it up with the "toe" of the other one and gingerly lift it up to my outstretched hand while still holding the buffer in my other hand... :smt101

Good point.

Back on track... Doug - the boat is looking good - when do you put it in?
