MSRP question

I went with a relative today to look at new boats. I told him this was a good time to buy, but the 4 places we went were only giving 10% off MSRP at best. We didnt sit down and haggle, but I thought with the way things are nowadays and being late in the year we should have seen much more off MSRP on an 08 model. What is a good number to go by? I did a search and seen someone say 30%, is this realistic?

Depends on the model and demand for that model but the general rule that I see is around 25% off a new boat at the boat show so that would be for an 09. Others will provide more detailed information but that seemed to be the general number that I see.
 
Given the time of year, financing issues, etc. I dont think starting @ 30 is unrealistic. Never bought a new boat but I've bought new vehicles 15-20% below MSRP. It'll be a sad day for the salesman that expects me to pay 10% below MSRP for a non esential item.

I was looking at a new 2008 40da a few weeks ago and they were 22% off on their first offer.

25% is what I was really expecting too Wesley. It also might help if we sat down with one of them and really found out what they would come down to. My cousin hasnt decided on which boat yet though and its his first, so he is being cautious.

mwph--- I agree, and told my cousin the same thing. If they really wanted to sell these they would take off more than 10%. He wants to go look again maybe this afternoon or saturday, so we'll see.
 
Demand and supply in whatever your local market is controls how cheap you buy a boat. For this reasons, there is no magic x% off MSRP that works. If you are looking at a hot seller in your market and there is one left, you won't steal it; conversly, if you are interested in a slow or average selling model or one with an odd color and the dealer has several, then pricing gets interesting.

One thing for certain is that you will never get the best price until you convince the guys at the dealership that you are not just a lookie-loo, but are there to buy a boat. Walk in with a checkbook and sit down across the desk from a salesman with a contract in front of you and the numbers will get interesting.

I keep my boat at a marina owned by our local Sea Ray dealer and was walking by a line of boats being cleaned to put in a show at the dealership last week and saw these numbers on an '08 280DA with single B-III power, and I don't know what options:

MSRP :$174,556
Normal sell price: $139,018
Sale price: $132,217
Boat show price: $115,311

And that is before any negotiation and before anyone made an offer........I know this dealer and that 280 can be bought for less than the show price if one wants to work at it.
 
Thanks for your input Frank. I will talk to my cousin about all this, he just needs to figure out which one he wants. I just got off the phone with him and he has it narrowed down to 2 brands and 4 boats :smt101 I appreciate everyones help here.
