I am moving to the Albany ny area. I am looking for the best marina on the Hudson river in the area. I run a 30' Sea Ray. Any suggestions?

I would ask Wayne, or MasterFab... You could even do as far a Lake Champlain in NH if you don't mind a ride...

Albany is pretty far North of me - on the order of 60 miles North. I have been up there a few times, but my wife and I usually head South, to LI Sound or the Atlantic, when we go cruising. I am afraid I won't be much help here, as I am not familiar with the Marinas up there.

What type of marina are you looking for - a well protected marina, a marina with a service/parts store, a pool, a restaurant, a playground - or all of the above :)

Depending on where you live/work, you might consider the Troy or east side of the river as well. Or you could consider marina's on the Mohawk river, it connects to the Hudson at Albany. Lake George (land locked) is about 60miles north of Albany and it has much more entertainment and activity then the river in Albany.

What brings you to Albany?

+1 on Lake George if you dont mind not having sound/ocean access - if and when you get sick of it you could always have the boat moved - lots of fun to be had on the Lake!

If you don't mind a short drive south, consider Donovan's Shady Harbor in New Baltimore. It's about 15 miles from downtown Albany. The new owners are real boaters and have taken a marina that had "good bones" and are making it great, particularly for the area. Pool, restaurant, bar, ship's store, mechanical services etc. in an absolutely beautiful setting on very nice grounds. It is on the river and you have the potential to get rocked a bit, but most respect the no-wake zone and people are there feel the exposure is worth the trade-off of the great spot. It is certainly worth checking out. There isn't a marina that isn't at least somewhat exposed as you head south until you get to Catskill Creek, parts of which have rebuilt since Irene.

Job transfer. Looking for a marina on the hudson. Lake champ is a bit far, but a great place to boat. I guess some where between Kingston ny and lock 1 on the hudson

The owners of Lock 1 Marina are terrific and it's a nice, very well-run place although there's not much there. It is a good destination for a quiet weekend. I'd encourage you to consider staying south of the Federal Lock if you want to be able to travel freely without having to lock through virtually every time you travel somewhere.

From Albany south
Albany Yacht Club ,Renssalaer NY
Castleton Boat Club, Castleton NY
Coyemans Landing, Coyemans NY
Donovans Shady Harbor , New Baltimore
Coxsackie Yacth Club Coxsackie NY

I'm at Castleton ,feel free if you need more local knowledge. The river has just as many boat clubs as marinas. There are reciprocal clubs from the Erie Canal to NYC,and beyond!

They moved my Lake?????? Or my state?????? Somebody skipped geography class!!!! Lake Champlain borders both NY and VT. 125 miles long and up to 14 miles wide. Great place to boat.

You didnt mention what type of boating you want to do, whether you are a dock rat or like to get off to some soft of land when you get claustrophobic. :) If you are looking for something in Kingston, Saugerties or Catskil area l, I could probably steer you in the right direction. I have stayed in many of the other marinas mentioned above. All are nice and have decent amenities. These marinas are also directly ON the hudson river. Some exposed to boat wakes which was a consideration for my family. we like calmer waters when we are docked... Here are some pointers for the 3 places I had mentioned.

Each are creeks which feed the Hudson and are calm.

Catskill Creek - about a mile long with what USED to be the best marina on the river called of all things "Catskill Marina" (again, just my .02) but was devastated by last years hurricane/flash flooding. Catskill is still beautiful but has fewer docks. I am not even sure what its status is. The same creek holds Hop-O-Nose and Catskill Yacht club. Both are decent... The town has some good food too and has a very artsy feeling. I love it there... but its too far for me to drive from NJ...or I would.

Saugerties/Esopus Creek - This is a smaller creek less than a mile I believe. It is VERY quiet and has a few decent marinas. Saugerties Powerboat and Lynch's Marina are the main ones... I dont have much experience with the town or the food. But I hear its decent. The water there is the cleanest of all of the creeks btw. we always swim there when at anchor.

Kingston - My weekend home. This is the largest of the creeks with many restaurants along the 3 miles of water. Amazing food in fact. Lots to choose from. Its a long creek and if you are at the end like I am, its a long ride to the hudson! But worth it. I'd say the main marina's are Rondout Yacht basin (the biggest and most amenites), Certified and Jeff's Marina which are very basic (not my style since wife/kids want more than a dock), then there is Lou Robertti's and Rondout Bay. Both are basic with good people. My marina is called The Anchorage. Family oriented with a big section of land (looks like a park) that you can have your own Gazebo, grill, deck, table/chairs etc... to me its the best and I am biased. But I have a family with kids who dont always want to be on the boat. we water ski/tube alot so the days are spent on the water and the evenings are on the land. A good trade-off.
Regardless of which you end up in, the boating is great and there is virtually no one on the water of late due to prices of fuel and the economy going south... so it will be quiet out there. Expect to pay between 45-65 per foot for dockage.

Good luck and if you need more info, dont hesitate to ask.
