I think I just might try and install a second battery tohight before the weekend. Can I mount the battery box on the floor nest to the original battery? Do I just drill pilot holes and screw the box down? Anyone have pics of the install by chance? Thanks!

I don't have any pics but I did this mod on my 230BR.. I actually mounted the second battery on the port side to try and equal out the weight. I added my battery switch in the middle of the engine box bulkhead. that way I could run no.1 / no.2 or both. We used to spend weekends out on the boat so two batteries became a must have.

I bought my 185 used and it has the dual battery setup. They mounted the second battery on the oposite side. I don't know which side it on originally, but the swtich is mounted on the port side wall that separates the engine from the "storage" areas. If you would like I'll try to snap some pics this evening.

...and I promise I'm not stalking you. just seem to have some of the same things going on.

I agree mount the battery opposite the other battery for balanced weight. My boat came with two batteries, but I added two additional batteries one on either side

I don't think there is room to mount the second battery on the port side in the same location as the first battery. I would love to see some pictures when you have time just to see the layout. At this point im just going to hit the lake this weekend and I'll try to work on it next week.

The trim pump is in the "exact" opposite side. There is plenty of room to mount a 2nd batt in front of the pump.

With the switch in position 1 or 2, I assume it only charges that particular battery. Does that mean it would be a good idea to run in 1+2 from time to time?

You are correct in the battery it charges.... As for running it in both. Watch what the voltmeter does at idle. If when the selector is set to both, and the voltmeter is above 12 at idle then you are fine. If not, the alternator is not big enough to handle the motor power and charge both batteries at once. It will kill the alternator, voltage regulator in a short amount of time.

When I added two more batteries to my boat... The alt would not handle all 4 batteries. So I had a bigger one custom built.

Not trying to be an as*, but I was just wondering................
Why do you need a second battery in a small boat? It's not like you will be camping overnight, or in the middle of the ocean, etc. Odds of the battery going dead is pretty slim. 99% of the cars on the road only have one bat, so why?

Run a high powered sound system for the day and have a second battery to ensure you can start up and go home

ok good point. I suppose if you float around for a few hours with the tunes cranked up, the single battery would be dead

Hemi2nv - did you install the second battery and switch yet? I would like to do the same and would like to see some pics! Thanks!
