More people out on the water just seem to be mad!

How is the admiral?
Very well thanks. Off cane, attending court Wednesday to make sure the lady that hit her doesn’t get off easy. Legal stuff, don’t know particulars but lawyer said she has to be there. Her new car arrived, very pretty, she happy, going back to work on 28th. GD lucky, could have been killed, seriously, it was bad, these new cars are freaking amazing with passenger protection. Some say, they don’t make them like the used to, to which I say thank god.

8-10knts, my kinda boating. I would much rather cruise at that speed than busting on plane anymore. At my age, aint in no hurry to get anywhere. The boat and me are both old enough that neither in a hurry.
Yep, just enough speed to take on any wake, keep a breeze blowing through the boat, being able to hear the tunes without blowing up the amp and the wee twins below my feet sipping fuel for a nice long ride. Yep for sure going out tomorrow.

Off topic, but what cartography are you running?

Garmin Vision+ Charts and Relief Shading w/sat images on. Going to upgrade to Navionics+ next year because of the auto-guidance support.

I don't get it, how in the world do you show up for a day on the water mad? If this is not your happy place, then your just an un-happy person. Case in point, two situations I found myself in over the last month -- now keep in mind, I spend at least one day a week out on the water and rarely have any issues with anyone.

1. I anchor in one of my favorite spots a couple of weeks ago - closest boat is @200 yards to STB. A pontoon shows up and anchors about 150ft in front of me - there was plenty of other room, but ok. Problem is, two other boats show up and raft to the pontoon. Then the whole mess starts dragging and they are now about 25ft from me - and on the move. Getting to close for comfort, I decide to move, but they are on top of my anchor - I am pretty much right on them by the time I get my anchor up - guy looks at me and asks why I put my anchor there - in a you idiot tone!

2. This past weekend we are putting along in a pretty big cove - mile+ long, 1/2mile wide. we are the only boat in there at this point. Then, I hear a boat to STB coming at an angle from behind and it is clear he is going to cross in front of me - it's a wake boat with a wakeboarder behind. This cove is huge, plenty of room for both of us and then some. He is overtaking me so I am the stand-on (clearly not a crossing situation), but if I don't do something he is going to come very close or worse, so I slow down and turn slightly to port. As he passes maybe 25ft throwing a monster wake, he starts yelling about he has the right of way since he is pulling a skier. At this point I feel things are pretty dangerous him being that close with the wakeboarder so I just shook my head and waved him off. This made him even madder as he continues yelling at me and not paying any attention to his kid who I could run over had I not done something. He then proceeds out through a cut to the main channel - he is pretty far away at this point, but I can still see him pressing is "right of way" status with other boats in the main channel. Now at this point he is in a crossing situation and technically is the stand on vessel. But crossing the main channel on a Saturday on LKN can be like trying to cross I-95 in some places. And to do all that while pulling your kid wakeboarding - who eventually fell out in the middle of everything - just damn!

** I get this is a recreation lake and many / most don't have any real knowledge of boat rules, navigation etc. You can't rely on other boats to understand these things on a lake like this - the general approach (for me at least) is just stay out people's way - no need to press the rules and get too worked up - lake most others I just want to enjoy a day on the water. However, I have to say I have had more close calls like this this summer than any of the previous 20+ years I have been boating. I even went and reviewed the "Rules of the Road" to make sure wake boats had not gotten a special classification I didn't know about.
So this is where I get in trouble, as soon as idiot #1 anchored in so close I would go into quiet confrontational mode (Queen always says I’m going to get shot) my first action would be to use the radio, not required on the lake but a good thing to have and a good way to let my young PD friends know things are a skew. Obviously there would be no response, then I would get their attention with my PA and broadcast my cell number and ask for a call, then proceed to hold school about proper anchoring/rafting and such. LN rule more than three boats rafted 300ft minimum from ANYTHING. Still no acceptable response IE gee sorry about that we will move over then I’m back on the radio reporting an inexperienced boater causing a dangerous situation. I’ve done this twice and both times the Calvary (PD) come cruising up. Amazing how cooperative people get when the blue lights are on. No yelling/cursing, me included. Things just seem to work out. Moral, get to know the fine folks that patrol your area/ stay calm and if you can’t work it out with someone bring in the referee. To let some yahoo bully you because they think they own the lake is unacceptable in my book.

I can tell you that humanity has beaten the patience right out of me over the last few years. Seems like everywhere I go there’s some idiot doing something stupid and I get tired of it.

Generally, it’s the pontoon boats that really pissme off. They seem to be the dumbest of the bunch on the water. I have had two of those drooling fuc*wits hit my boat at the dock over the years.

One on my brand new, second trip out 2015 Sea Hunt that cost about $1000 to fix. One ran into my old Wellcraft V20
Hey, wait a minute....I resemble that remark. However, all of my neighbors have one on our tiny lake, and after a few libations, we are the dumbest bunch on the water. Haven't seen any drooling fuc*wits tho.;)

So I would like to clarify my remark, CFBC also rents bow riders up to 26’ it isn’t the vessel, it’s the operator. ;)

Back in the 1960's when I first got a boat of my own, I took the "course". I learned a lot, but then again I'm respectful to others, and of course Grandpa taught me all I needed back in the 1950's.

Later on, wife and kids and they all took the course as well.

The surge came in the 1980's. More boats on the water, most driven by novices. Even uneducated, they were as least respectful.

Then comes covid. Nothing to do. Buy a boat and ravage the neighborhood. Now it's not a matter of being respectful, it's that we are being screwed by our government (masks, shots, etc.) so now we don't care about our fellow man any more (maybe never did).

Thankfully I'm retired. No more weekends for us. Only go out when the fat ladies are in their kayaks.....

(PS- not being nasty - I like fat ladies)

I’m sticking by my statement. it usually some clueless retired age guy with more money than brains sporting a $350k moron barge with twin 350+ horse outboards.

I still call it Covid boating, they took the funds sent to them and bought a boat. No idea how things work on the water but by god they are out there! These days I stay away from other boaters unless I know them.
Me too! The farther the better!

The Covid boaters were a plague on my lake. 2019 was the lowest traffic since I had started there in 2004. Then the Covid boaters buzzing around all over the place with no regard for the rules. My favorite are still the pontoon running at night with their headlights a blazing. Fuck everybody else's night vision. Wake boats full of ballast pulling a surfer into a cove littered with anchored boats. This year that has calmed down quite a bit. I think a lot of of the Covid people are finding out that gas is the cheapest part of boating. I see a lot of 2019 - 2021 used boats for sale now. Good riddance.

Hard to stay away from them stupid boaters. Was on the lake a few weeks ago at a time when there weren't a lot of other boats. Was cruising at a leisurely pace (probably 8 knots) when I was overtaken by another 30 footer at WOT less than 15 feet away. Some people just have to be idiots,

Always with the f**king “headlights”

It's been different for me. We do our favorite boating on Lake Powell. Between the lower water levels and the removal of Dangling Rope Marina, if you get up lake just a little, it has been absolutely dead.

I'd really like to see the water level come back up, and the return of a mid-lake marina. But until then, I will enjoy the peacefulness.

I've been a weekday boater since moving north. Not having to deal with the conga line of boats coming and going in the marina (900 boats) and just dealing with the constant crossing traffic on the north end of Lake St Clair on the weekends.

I thought Powell had come up a lot since winter.

Agree, it has. But off the highs from July

Higher than it has been in years, but still nowhere near the traditional water levels. Even at its peak this year, the cut at Castle Rock was still impassible for most boats.

We did have a great precipitation year, and we are not in a drought, let alone a "mega-drought" as the media reports. Demand has gone way up and the river just can't keep up.

You are required to take, complete and pass a boating safety course in Virginia. I carry my card with me at all times. I don't know if the CG checks for this though if they stop you.

"Once you complete the course, the course completion certificate or card that is provided by the course provider is what is required to operate a vessel"

Go fast boats, bass boats and jet skis seem to be the biggest offenders where I boat/boated. I think they think speed trumps all rules.

My late dad used to say, when I was a kid, him driving (like a maniac) "they could build a road for me, my own roads, nobody else could use them, and some idiot would get in the way on mine".
