Modification project of the year. 260 Sundancer, Armstrong bracket, 350 Yamaha outbrd

Re: Modification project of the year. 260 Sundancer, Armstrong bracket, 350 Yamaha ou

or... if you want to stick with Sea Ray - at least this one is already stripped out... The swimplatform is already gone... One question - is the transom of an i/o boat strong enough for any outboard - let alone a 350hp monster?

I hate to be negative.
Its not that CSR guys really want to bash your idea.
Its just the worst boat modification idea that has ever came up on a public forum. :smt100

And I'm all for upgrading and modifying boats to the owners liking.

I/O to bracketed outboard conversions have been successfully done for two decades. Usually, no structural reinforcement to the transom is necessary and only the I/O cutout needs to be filled in. It used to be common in the days before integrated swim platforms and euro-transoms, to find the same boat offered in a cutout transom, full transom with bracket, and I/O. Transom construction was the same in all cases.

There are other issues to be considered such as weight distribution (hanging a bracketed outboard- particularly the heavy 4s's- often lowers the stern and can put scuppers underwater), but this type of conversion is done every day, albeit more of a fishboat thing than cruisers.

Years ago I was on such a boat.
It was a 29ft Baylinxx express with twin outboards on a bracket way off the back. 150hp each I think it was?
We were bar hoppin in florida's intercoastal at no wake speed.
The owner claimed he had it out in the ocean and it handled great.
I remember looking in the empty engine room hatch and yes there was a whole lot of room....

This was posted in classics some time ago...But then it got old and no updates were posted.
When I bought my boat this outboatd conversion was a suggestion that he made to me. I thought he smoked way too much crack.
Now on my boat it problably could be done, but why re-invent the wheel?

Re: Modification project of the year. 260 Sundancer, Armstrong bracket, 350 Yamaha ou

Yes my fellow Sea Ray junkies...I am 1/2 way to possibly starting this porject.

Here is the concept: I am going to remove the 350 Mag off my 260 Sundancer, install an Armstrong bracket off the transom and then throw a new 350 Yamaha outboard on the boat.

I have found a yard that is wiling to take on the project with me.

I have been thinking over the power needs as have the guys at the yard in regards to the loss of the alternator from the 350 Mag. We just ordered the detailed specs from Yamaha and are just mulling around ideas in case the Yamaha alternator will not have enough juice to power the battery charging system. ANy thoughts on that one folks?

2nd: I have a few ideas of what I am going to do with the extra space in the engine room with the inboard removed. Interested in anyone's ideas on that.

I am sure many of you are thinking: "Why the heck is the guy going to trash his boat and remove his engine and make all these crazy mods.

Well, I am over hearing about my outdrive this...my inboard that, my maintenence costs are crazy, etc., etc., Yes I am aware the amount of money we may spend will ebe beyound any maintenance cost savings, but dam......

WHY CAN'T A GUY GET A NICE CRUISER WITH A YAMAHA 350 OUTBOARD ON THE BACK????

So, I think that I am going to take this on and try to complete before this summer hits. Yes, i do have a back up boat so I won't lose any time on the water just in case things go past the spring.

I will keep everyone posted and appreciate anyones comments, taunts or general, "you are nutza' buddies.

Sometimes, you just have to see if it can go down.

Wish me skill!!

Whooo Hooo, I've been threatining to do this also. Some do some wish. Your the man, guess I'm a wisher.LOL I know it can be done.

Have you thought about twin 150's or even, when they come out with the four banger 200's from Yamaha?
I'll be watching for up dates.

Re: Modification project of the year. 260 Sundancer, Armstrong bracket, 350 Yamaha ou

ya'll i said it wasn't going to happen. I am glad that we are all enjoying the banter however.

Hey us Northers have a couple of month's to splash the boat..Makes us crazy!

If you have the means, how about a 496 HO on a Bravo I?

http://www.mercurymarine.com/engines/inboards/sterndrives/mpi496ho_specs.php

That would be a sweet rig. Put a 23" prop on it and you could cruise about 50~55...lower the hammer and squeeze 65~70.

Can you imagine the look on the face of your local "go fast" guy when you ease by in a 260 Dancer wth thru hub & no noise at about 60 MPH...pulling away...

Just the thought of those mods make me :smt089:smt089:smt089.

Don't let a few CSR's talk you out of your idea. Just take lot's of pictures and shoot some video for the first run on the water. I need some entertainment over the winter.

I think Medic was yanking our chains!

BTW, I am considering removing the flybridge from my boat and replacing it with a two level tuna tower - although this might make the boat a bit more top-heavy, it would decrease weight and wind resistance. Also considering intalling two Wankel Rotary engines.

Thoughts, comments??

Leave the flybridge and put the tower over it. The sole of the tower will also provide a hard top for the fly. You get a twofer.

Even with the weight savings, I don't think the wankel will produce enough power.

A couple of THESE, on the other hand would probably do.
