Moderation...

Keep your chin up, Wesley. Your job as a Mod is to keep things running smoothly within the parameters set by the site administrator. Your job is NOT to make everyone happy, all of the time.

I feel your pain, my friend. I've been a Mod at CK5.com, a Chevy K-series truck site with over 40,000 registered members, for over 10 years. I realized long ago that I was never going to keep everybody happy with the decisions I made. For me, the important thing is that my decisions are based on the good of the membership as a WHOLE, and that said decisions reflect the "prime directive" issued to me by the site admin when I signed up for the job.

You guys do a good job, brother. Don't sweat the whiners. They're everywhere, and they're never leaving.

Paul

I think your doing a great job Wesley. The thread in which you are refering too was a "light" topic. Soda freezing. The person who started the thread had his answer. If it was bothering them they would have said it. In fact it was just the opposite and he joined in also having some fun. You did right by letting it go. Over moderation is wrong too but the right amount is great. You, my friend, have it down perfect. Side note to Stihlbolts. Richard, are you sure you want that moderating job back?? :) Thanks again Wes. Brian

Wesley

You can't please everybody and this comes with the job of being a moderator. For the most part this is pretty tame board with only an occasional troublemaker that needs to be set in their place.

So just have everyone watch this video to learn the proper way to behave on the internet. :wow::wow: :grin:

Funny how some threads are allowed to run their course while others are brought under control quickly. Guess it all depends who is doing the posting...
In addition to sharing our knowledge we are sharing our personalities. Suppress that and you supresss the willingness to share that knowledge as some have stated above. Unless the objective is to turn this board into a Searay Wikipedia, I say let the guys loose once in a while and stop worrying so much about the "search" feature. Forums are about interacting, not research.
That being said, it's no easy job and I respect and appreciate your effort Wesley.

wow, i somehow feel a bit of responsibility here. i am so sorry if i stirred the pot or allowed the pot to be stirred. my post asking about who the mods were, was exactly that, i was just curious. as that post stated, other forums i have been involved in always had a thread or something introducing the mods and listing their specific expertise if they had one.

i've been on a few boards where no mods were used at all. although i was a soldier for 24 years, and speak two languauges fluently, english and profaniety, with english being my second language, some of the posts offended me!!!! i don't visit those boards anymore.

moderators are needed in moderation. and again i would offer my time and services if you deemed it would be of value.

and always note, no matter what you do in light of moderating, you're just not gonna keep everybody happy. i think you guys are doing a great job and offer a great forum, please keep up the great work.

As a new member I think the board is good overall. The only time I get annoyed at the banter is when it fills up 7 pages and I have to read it all to get an answer. The subject post certainly wasn't one of those since it was answered very quickly. It takes quite a bit to offend me and the easy answer on most of these posts is to just move to the next one. I've seen this struggle on many boards - bottom line as others have already mentioned - you will not make everyone happy so do what you feel is the correct thing for the site. If someone doesn't like it they can contact you or maybe they'll volunteer some of their time to assist....

My .02 - in the meantime - keep the info coming! And as Frank mentioned - the more technical the better!

The discretion by the moderators of this forum is right on. I wouldnt change a thing. If we need a nudge to stay on topic or start another thread, it happens. I personally dont feel this forum is OVER moderated or UNDER moderated. People will always have, and are always entitled, to their own opinion. Its the spice of life and internet forums ;)

I am a member of several boards and like others have mentioned, some are not moderated, some are over moderated, this one is great like it is. You are doing a great job, keep up the good work.

I'll put my vote in the "Moderation in Moderation" group. I know I go off topic myself a bit.

Moderators here, IMHO, do a fine job!!!!

I too like the level of moderation on this board.

Personally, I don't think we need to keep anyone happy but Frank and Playdate.

If necessary, we need to put them on salary. I don't feel that way so much in the winter. . .but once the boat goes back in the water and everything starts breaking again. . .I want both Frank and Playdate happy and posting.

Ok. . .like any good forum member, I had to rubberneck and read that thread.

And yes. . .while TurtleTone's picture was classic, the biggest laugh I had was Wesley's edit of Gary's post.

Overall, I really like this board and do not think the board is undermoderated.

If you go back and re-read all 4 pages of postings on this topic, it seems to me there are 3 common thoughts.......

1.the current level of moderation suits about everyone
2. Wesley does a great job
3. sometimes the banter or off topic exchanges take threads way off subject

Perhaps we need some self-moderation by members along the way. Now, I'm not for censoring each other, but if I see you posting something that isn't right, I'm going to ask you about it. But, if you post something that is just plain dumb, you are on your own and at the mercy of the "banter-department"!

Bingo.

ON TOPIC!!!!

There we go anyone parusing (SP?) this trhead knows topic related content is to follow... Otherwise it may be rambling witty or witless banter..

This site is well run. I like the site because you can learn from other people's experiences in operating and maintaining your boat. My only complaint is that people don't post more pictures of their work so I can copy them! It's great to chat with other people who share the same passion that you do. :smt038
