Mid-90's 270 Sundancer Thread

Any updates on the upholstery? I'm waiting until January to start mine and am in the process of looking for ideas. I know I'm doing my best to get rid of the 'wonderful' green on the boat - including the piping on the seats when they get redone.

That will be an improvement. The admiral wouldn't look at boats with that color scheme. MM

This upohlstery guy has been stalling for over a month now. I've heard every excuse under the sun from waiting on sewing machine parts to problems with Immigration over his work VISA. I actually got an install date for this past tuesday and I took off work to meet him only to get an excuse that he had to re-stitch the port side lounge because he had problems making it curve correctly. I've gotten a bit irritated between that and having some stuff stolen off the boat. I have asked for some pictures of his progress and I still haven't got those, although he said he would try to do a test fit today and install. I did get the bilge heater installed and winterized the fresh water system. If I don't get some progress soon with this guy I may have to go to extreme measures. I was going to give him some more work after this, but at this pace I wouldn't get that back until Spring.

Hello all,
This forum, and this thread, have been extremely helpful in getting great and accurate information. Thank you to all the owners and your willingness to help.
After many months of looking for the right deal, I'll be taking delivery of my1997 270 (Single 7.4 / Bravo II) on Saturday. I owned a 1999 340 DA a few years back and really like the Sea Ray Brand. The 270 seems to be the perfect boat for trailering around Florida and doing some extended cruising so I'm looking forward to the next couple of months.
Like any boat, I have a few projects planned and I was looking for suggestions.

1. The snap in cockpit carpet is missing, so I'm looking for suggestions. There are a ton of companies that play in that space, so I'm looking for some input on who has done a good job for you all in the past.

2. My boat has 300 hours and is in great shape. Other than the typical maintenance, are there any preventative measures I should think about now to avoid a costly repair in the future?

3. Has anybody made any modifications geared towards fishing? The spring kingfish run is a few weeks away and I'd like to see any examples of creative rigging and such.

Thanks in advance for all the help!

Best regards,
TM

I used Custom Marine Carpet: http://www.snapincarpet.com/ It fit perfectly and they offerd the heavier carpet with gray Aqua-Loc backing that doesn't fall apart and stain your deck black like the original carpet. Mine was $660 shipped.

2. My boat has 300 hours and is in great shape. Other than the typical maintenance, are there any preventative measures I should think about now to avoid a costly repair in the future?

Check your risers and manifolds: http://clubsearay.com/showthread.php/48957-Manifolds-and-risers-why-check-them

Don't mess up my boat with that fishing stuff.:smt043

Congrats on the new boat and welcome aboard. See above in RED.

Congrats on the new boat! I think MM covered most of the main things to think of. Maybe check the impeller unless you have record of service. Alpha's are easy to check/replace, but i don't know about Bravo's

While I'm here. I thought I would give an update on my projects.
Finally got the cockpit upohlstery back and installed.(not the greatest job but I got a discount for the delays) I'll post pics when I remember to download my camera.
Installed a new Fusion stereo and wired remote and it sounds fantastic. (the remote was a PITA to pull the wire and I had to make a custom face-plate for the stereo for the size difference.)
Going to order the camper canvas and poles from Great Lakes on MM's recommendation. ( gotta get this done before the end of Feb. to get the 25% discount).
Decided to wait on the water heater replacement till spring so I don't have to re-winterize the water system to test it.
Still trying to find the most cost effective way to update my gauges having twins. ( I have some mis-matched replacements )
I've torn out most of the sliding storage doors in the cabin (most were beyond repair and it actually increased storage space).

What is the quote for the poles and framework? Do you have an original working trim gauge? Mine is mis-matched

MM

I don't have the exact quote for all the canvas and poles with me but its right around $1700 with everything shipping included. I'll get you the quote for just the poles when I get home. I do remember the shipping for the poles was an upcharge of like $40 for the oversized box to ship them in.
Actually I have both original trim gauges (gray bezel?) that work.....I assume you are hinting about wanting one when I replace? No prob if so.
My conundrum with buying the new gauges is....
1. If I buy 2 "sets" of gauges for the twins, I don't feel like I'm saving anything since I'll end up with an extra fuel gauge and a 2 spedometers I don't need.
2. Buying individually seems even more expensive
3. I have only 2 different styles of mis-matches, original and a black/red style. If I could find either style still available, I could just replace the remaining, but no luck so far.

What props are you 7.4 Bravo II Guys running? Mine came with a 17 3/4" Diameter 23 Pitch and I'm not sure about it. I am getting up to 4200 RPM's at WOT so It feels propped right, but are there any benefits to going to a different diameter / pitch? I'll primarily be cruising with 2 adults / 2 kids and not doing much in the way of watersports/towing... Thanks in advance.

Congrats on the new boat. I've added some fishing functionality to mine. 4 rod holders - 2 on each side and a fishfinder. The rod holders are set so the rears are straight back and the front of the pair is set at as much of an angle as I could get. It's worked really well for me but certainly isn't ideal - but for anything serious I take the Parker out or go with friends. Blood and guts in the cockpit isn't nearly as much fun as it sounds..... I'll try to find some pics of mine.

We just bought a 1998 270 with the 9'2" beam. I think you may need to add more differences from the lower priced special edition model. First of all the weight empty is much heavier at 7500 pounds (add 100 gallons of fuel, 56 gallons of water and you are now at close to 8500 pounds). Second the long swim platform with enclosed step ladder is standard. The 7.4 Merc is standard on this model. Add of course the dinette below. I am sure there are more but in looking at these 2 models these differences made the wider beam the right model for us. Our boat seems to have come with most options including Brovo III, camper canvass, Heat and Air, vac flush. About the only thing it does not have is a generator.

Of course we are now going to have to upgrade our sling boathouse lift to hold 10,000 pounds!

Thanks!

I just bought a 1998 270 DA and was concerned about loading and unloading the boat on the trailer as the weight is so much greater than my current 22 foot Chris Craft. I am TOTALLY new to the Sea Ray and am concerned I am going to not do this right.

For example, I have read in other threads about water getting into the engine thru exhaust. What are the exhaust issues for water getting in the engine mentioned earlier? Is this something I have to do or is it automatic?

I can't find anything about this in the owners manual.

Further any other issues I need to know now and NOT at the marina?

Thanks!

Congratulations on your purchase. This is the narrow beam (8'6") thread. You want the 1998 and newer 270 thread found here. http://clubsearay.com/showthread.php/1786-Late-90-s-270-Sundancer-Thread Below I reposted the 270 history.

Good luck, MM

1994-1997 270 Sundancer and 1998 and 1999 270 Sundancer Special Edition History

The number 270 has been used since the early 80s for various styles of boats manufactured by Sea Ray. The SRV 270 Sundancer moniker was used in 1982 for a 28 foot, 10 foot beam express cruiser. The 270 designation went through various changes in length and beam throughout the 80’s and into the early 90’s.

In 1994, a new hull design was released known as the 270 Sundancer. This design featured oval porthole windows that have become synonymous with the Sea Ray look and two glass hatches. This vessel had a 27’ 4” overall length and with the integral bow pulpit was 29’ 11”. Standard power was a Mercruiser 5.7 BII, with optional 7.4’s, diesels, and 4.3 twins. In 1996 and 1997, the 7.4 with BII became the standard power package. The BIII’s were always an option. In 1995, A/C was offered followed by generator packages in 1996. Each year the options list grew smaller, even while they added options, as most options were moved to standard features by 1997. The base weight grew from 6100lbs in 1994 to 6500lbs in 1997 as the options list grew.

In 1998, the 270 Sundancer became a 9’ 2” beam boat and the package described above became the 270 Sundancer SE. (The 270 now offered a separate dinette in the cabin and is the quickest way to tell it and the SE apart.) This SE boat did undergo some changes. The standard power went back to 5.7 BII with the optional 7.4 BIII also available; diesel and twins were no longer offered. Other changes were the complete loss of one of the glass fore deck hatches, while the VHF radio and many other previously standard features became options again.

The advertised weight remained the same for 1998 but dropped to 6200lbs in 1999, it is thought this was an oversight as the options were removed in 1998 not 1999. At this point, they were using this hull for a “price point boat” as evidenced by the advertising slogan; “Is it too much boat for the money? The competition thinks so”. The 1999 270 SE continued, as in 1998, but now had competition from the new 260 Sundancer as a large trailerable Sea Ray. 1999 was the last year for this hull design.

Hello all,
I've had my 97 270 for a month now and have really enjoyed this boat. It's proven to be a great boat for what we do. I am surprised on the little fuel I have burned this far and was wondering what kind of economy you all are seeing. I filled up, cruised at 3100 RPM (26 MPH) for 36 miles and then refilled at the same marina. It only took 12 Gallons. 7.4 bravo II with 100 Gallons of Fuel, 2 adults 2 kids, little gear.
- Does 3 MPG or 9 GPH sound right?
- Does anyone have a GPH VS RPM VS MPH chart from Sea Ray?

I hope to get better data when I install the fuel flow meter. MM

Which fuel flow meter are you using? What are you using as a display for the gauge information? This is on my list for next years projects.

John

Going to add it to my Garmin, then put the read out at the bottom fo my display. Firecadet, a member here, already has this setup.

Hey N369 ,unless mercruiser changed their exhaust after 96' which is the year of my270.Their are exhaust flappers both sides just below the risers. If they aren't there it would let water into exhaust. They work like check balls.I replaced mine 2 years ago not a bad job. Had both done in under an hour. The metal flappers are held in rubber o ring such gasket. They dry rot and then the exhaust will blow flappers out.Hope that helps
