Michigan Harbors

He must have low water at his marina.I cant see the feds giving out money for us when they are spending so much on the upper east coast region for the next few years. There is also a lot of the icw that has been waiting for dredgeing and repairs for years just to keep sections of it passable but commercial has dropped on portions and the gov spends for itself before thinking of these type of projects as not enough recognition will be shown for the efforts.Glen

We had our shallow harbor dredged two year ago. Federal and State dollars ( 1.3 million)

On an only slightly related topic I have something you Great Lakes boaters might be interested in. Several years ago I was planning on bringing my 330 Sundancer back to MI to spend a summer on the lakes. I put together a mileage chart similar to what you see on a regular highway map, that has the distances between cities on Lake Michigan, Huron and the North Channel and Georgian Bay. It's an excel spreadsheet and looks like one of those triangular shaped mileage charts on a map.

If anyone wants a copy, pm me with your email address and I'll send it to you.

On the west coast of Canada the federal government sold (?) most of the public docks to the comunities. They are now a user pay and rates went up. It will probably happen to your harbors. No way a comunity can recoop 1.3 million on gas, moorage and ice cream sales.

And i just read that the harbor master in leland is out asking for $$ to dredge the inlet again .last year he begged up 60 grand from bussinesses etc.to have it done ,now it needs it again as it is only 4 ft deep and needs 10,000 sq yards of sand removed.Thats a fairly new harbour, perhaps a design flaw? But usace has no plans to dredge this year in Leland .Grand haven municipal launch will be dredged though by usace funds.

Leland's basic design has stood the test of time for many years. These water level issues are recent and we've not ever been this low even in the 60s. I remember water breaking over the top of the rip rap in 1986 during west winds when the harbor was 10-11 feet deep in just about all areas. The fishing tugs must be nearly sitting on the bottom of the river currently.

Caseville will needd 10,000 cu yds of sand removed before boting begins. Hurrican Sandy winds pushed the sand against the pier.

I saw that pic somewhere.

gov snyder of michigan gave a big speach today and is trying to commit moneys from a new gas tax to keep michigan harbors dredged 11.5 million $$$,we will pay first i assure.

Well it seems as though, all they can do is talk about while the water levels keep sinking, can't wait for one of those freighters to run aground,. then they will start doing something other then dredging again and again... Like put some Locks in in the St Clair River, let's start managing the flows better, I believe Lake superior is only down 1 inch from 30 year data..., but as it always is, our voice means nothing...

On the bright side all the save our shoreline people will be pleased.
