Messed up Props (hit ground) - 390 DA

Thanks Bluebelly, I'll call both of the folks you mentioned tomorrow. I think that cupping you are referring to is the problem in my picture, ie. they were straight until I hit ground, now they are bent on the ends in various places to various degrees. So that's not something that I want to order and it wasn't/isn't supposed to be that way. Or maybe I don't know what you mean by cupping. ?

As for the WOT, to be honest I have no idea. Not sure what the specs are, not sure what it can/does to related to those. Not even sure where to start on that or how I would specify pitch, etc. I guess I'm at a loss on how to proceed with all that and pressed for time if I want to get this up and running in time for the long labor day weekend - so I'll probably go with the default/match what I had on there already.

Regards,
Jason

The cupping I am referring to is not related to the damage I see in your picture. If you were to feel the leading edge of a new perfect propeller for your boat, you would feel a slight cupping of the edge. This is to improve the efficiency of the prop and is needed on some boats for reasons too numerous to mention here. Some applications do not require the cupping and some do. It would be possible to order the props that match the stamp of your hubs, and you may think they are identical, but if they are not cupped then they will never perform correctly.

If you dont know the wot on your boat, then forget what I wrote in my last post about changing the pitch. It is not worth all the trouble.

By the way, did you ever correct your a/c noisy fan motor or wheatever it was?

Bluebelly - sent you a PM re the A/C just so we wouldn't take this thread off topic ... thanks again for all your help!

+1 to Franks original reply.

Been there done that 2 times this year. Hit a log in December, ran a ground 2 weekends ago. Bent one shaft hitting the log, $900 , 2 new 4 bladed 17 X 16 props casted from Michigan wheel, $2000.

Running aground only cost us $150 to recondition one bent prop.

Check the shafts, if they are bent you will have to pay for another haul out.

Hope you don't have V-drives...
Good luck.[/quote]

Our of curiosity- what is the issue with v-drives?

Thanks

Is there a 5 digit serial # on your props? Like JK216 or something similar. I can tell you exactly what props came on your boat with this info, and where and when they were made.

A few notes:

- I do have V-drives

- Visually under the boat the shafts look perfect, would I be
able to see if they were out of alignment/damaged or is it
so subtle that it requires pulling the boat and testing?

- If there is a 5-digit SN I can't find it ...

Thanks,
Jason

Have a mechanic put a dial indicator on the shafts. Never hurts and again it will save you haul out.

Can you spin the shafts/props freely with little effort?

I would agree that your shafts are *probably* OK. The tone of your first post left me with the impression that the props sustained much more damage. From your pic, that's no big deal and I'd be surprised if that bent the shaft...
Like Greg said if you can spin the props freely (nothing binding) that's a good indication. When you have the new props put on and take it for a spin, pay careful attention to see if you notice any vibration that wasn't there before. Be sure to verfiy your max rpms as well with the new props. Good luck.

i thought it was nickel-bronze-alloy. learn somethin' new every day.

I did find those SNs:

21 x 22.5 LH = S/N: A3068
21 x 22 RH = S/N: A0320

and the props are off, all in all they didn't look too bad. I shipped them down to Brunswick, GA (for reconditioning) to the place Bluebelly recommended. The diver checked out everything on the boat as best he could (just a visual inspection) and said it all looked perfect. Yes I could turn the props with no problem, had to do that Monday to get the first set of numbers in fact.

So far so good ... just hoping when they go back on there is no vibration and I should be all set.

Now I just need a forward scanning radar to prevent this from happening again, but I'm reading about them and I don't think what's on the market would have prevented this (for starters I was running about 20mph).

Regards,
Jason
