Memorial Day Air Show at Jones Beach, New York

The Air Show for Memorial Day! That's a great idea, I'm in...

It is about time we heard from you! Now it is a party!

Ken, while the conditions weren't perfect it wasn't anything the boat or the crew couldn't handle. I attribute it to bad luck and timing. If and when we where seated it was fine, 4'-5' ers with that boat at 30kts was no problem. I feel so bad for Larry as now his season is shortened significantly and all he was doing was helping a friend out. Ain't that always the way?????
No good deed goes unpunished!!!

Brian,
I plan leave my home port around 3:30-4:00. I should arrive between 5:00-6:00 (depending if I need a stop at the fuel dock first).

We usually try to anchor in the western end of Zach's Bay near the pin in the attached picture:

So what's the story with the submerged piles before you get to the designated anchorage area? Oh and what direction do you anchor in (bow east or southeast)?

Submerged piling?! Never heard of this. .. in or entering zacks

There are poles that separate an area near the Jones Beach Theater and a bathing area that boats are not supposed to enter. It is clearly visible when you see the stone/brick gazebo looking structure on the land coming out from the beach.
As for anchoring, at first we will just anchor based on the prevailing winds. If we can, we will try to anchor stern to the beach that will be on your port side (south side of the bay) as you enter Zach’s and head west towards the theater. It will get shallow towards the beach so try to stay off a little ways. You will likely see several boats out there already by the time you arrive, so as they say, just go with the flow.

Well, Jonathan, I'm just looking at the chart that Harold posted yesterday morning. It clearly shows a line of submerged piles (they run NW to SE just above the name Zachs on the chart). I take it they do not exist????

Brian,
The pilings near the word "Zach's" in the chart are 4 pilings that are visible (and usually have boats tied off to them). You will pass between them with one pole on your starboard side and the other three to your port. I have never encountered submerged pilings in that area. The ones I was referencing in my last post to you are the ones to the west extending off of the spit of land. Most of those are visible as well and mark a "Do Not Enter" area of the bay.

Ok, thanks. I'm aware of the Do Not Enter area but I had not previously noticed the submerged piling notation.

Well I never noticed them on my charts. I'm going to check of there even on mine . I don't think they are. But there are pilings there but definetly not submerged. I wouldn't worry about them but the pilings to left of his pin mark are the. Those I know about. As Harold said those pilings ate actually a chain ran through floating wood that is suppose to keep boats out of the swimming area and away from the stage. I can't tell you how many boats I've seen try to cross then at bought because you can't c them. Lots of crunching and cursing.

Looks like we're going to have a dominate wind out of the south for the weekend which kinda sucks because our stern will be facing north and the action will be to our south but that's ok.

Just drove by on my way home and all the poles are open... And the boat that is always there is gone.... Wonder what happened??

I just drove by about an hour or so ago too. Tried to get a picture of the bay to get everyone excited. Best I could get was this:

Did not see that boat that takes the middle pole either. Well that boat is old and quite frankly so is the guy that owns it. Don't wish any ill will either way, just saying.
