Memorial Day Air Show at Jones Beach, New York

Gerry I tried also but ended up taking a pic on my headliner of my passenger window...

Jonathan... I sure hope so, one of my group is going tomorrow morning so we shall see how it plays out

Looks like we're going to have a dominate wind out of the south for the weekend which kinda sucks because our stern will be facing north and the action will be to our south but that's ok.

If the winds are going to be from the South most of the weekend, I think it would be best if we anchor with the bow facing into the wind. I am ok with sitting on the bow to watch the air show. What does everyone else think?

I'm all for bow to the wind. Looks like the wind is going to shift on Sunday though, So we will need stern anchors...

A few shots from prior years...

Question for you guys.... I'm not rafting with you guys but I will be in a raft with about 5 boats... In the past we have always used the big boat and anchored in the middle and we just swing with the crowd..

This year 2 of us have upgraded to bigger boats... You think we will be ok on one anchor still or should we use multiple... I'm always worried when two anchors are out and we swing they will get crossed... Should we use a stern anchor?

I'm leaning towards one anchor and hope for the best.,, it's going to be a **** show in zachs this weekend anyways...

Any advise would be appreciated...

I should add that at the end of last season we would take day trips and all be on one anchor no problem...

Since you have a 43 sundancer and 1 other large boat I would throw another hook in the water and prob stern anchors as well I wouldn't want you to drift into us. Last thing we want is a sh** show ruining our weekend. I know the winds are projected as low but better safe than sorry when we raft we always use a few anchors and stern anchors we just don't swing with the wind.

I was kidding about just hoping for the best...

I was genuinely asking for advise... 4 boats will be over 40ft and 2 are 34footers...

Two bow anchors and 2 stern anchors? Or can we just leave bow anchors out so we swing with the rest of the boats?? If we have a stern anchor and don't swing won't other boats swing into us?

Maybe someone wants to come make sure we're set good so we don't ruin your weekend :)

Andrew,
With the amount and size of boats you have and assuming you are staying overnight, I would agree with Joe, you need at least two or three bow anchors and I would suggest two stern anchors as well. I would also suggest marking the lines with a float so that other boats can see them.
If you just use bow anchors and the raft-up swings from wind or tides, the rodes will get tangled up and potentially drag.

Even though it will be crowded, you should be able to find space to anchor in a position that is outside of any neighbors' swing radius. Remember, most other boats do end up leaving at the end of the day. The majority don't end up staying the night.

Remember, venture over to us and say hi. I will find you and come say hello to.

Thanks Gerry... Yes I will make it my business to come introduce myself to the gang...

Interesting read on how to do it..

http://cruising.coastalboating.net/Seamanship/Anchoring/Etiquette.html

"first boat to set the hook sets precedent"
Now keep in mind most boaters are clueless.
But, if a group of boats is happily swinging on anchor when you arrive and then you set multi bow hooks or a stern hook..you'll need to be way off to the side of everybody due to their swing room needed.

Not swinging with the group severely limits the amount of boats able to occupy a given space. I anchor often and it's always a s*** show because of different size/style boats, different scope used, various number if boats in a raft, ect, ect....

Just remember its all for fun......

Dale, we'd love to see ya again try to make it happen.

ps. Harold your user name is confusing i.e.: Shane is referring to you as Gerry I believe he thinks this is your first name. Highlight your name in your Sig.

Our rule of thumb, in normal conditions, is every other boat has a bow anchor out and those without bow anchors throw a stern anchor (set by dinghy). Never fails.

Dale, you have to go! I need to have this thing fabricated and I've never seen one before so I need you to look at my boat while in the water to get the dimensions for the doohickie so you can make the thingymagig. So you see it's part business part vacation.

Lol... I meant Harrold...
