I just had a thought after reading the So much for peace of mind post. I'm convinced we need a Marine Mechanic recommendation forum. I spend lot of time on a huge car forum that has a mechanic and product recommendation forum, many people find it very helpful. I think if we had one here it would be invaluable.
The way it works is simple you never post the name of a bad mechanic due to possible legal ramifications, it's OK to tell your story but leave the name out. However when you have a good experience, tell the story and name names. A big rule to follow would be to start the title of your recommendation post with your location. For Instance ' Waretown NJ Mech. Recommendation' this way you wont need to read 100s of posting to find someone in your area.
So whaddayahthink? worth pursuing? I so I will contact the webmaster and ask him to create a category.

Sounds like a good idea to me! People are always telling their tales of woe with bad mechanics on this forum. Maybe a few could be spared in the future.

I think this post was a question about starting a new forum where you could post your post in it's own thread. MM :smt043

Its a good idea... just need to know where the best place to post the recommendations... We might want to and what work we had done...

I had the same proposal regarding surveyors. I thought it was a good idea, but it didn't make it to its own forum. Hopefully Mechanics Recommendations will.

I think I remember this thread & the moderators were going to look into it. Perhaps just an all inclusive "Recomended Services".

If I remember correctly, a possible hold up was what if someone recommended XYZ repair shop and someone else wanted to negate it or post a contradiction. Liability (for posting said contradictions) falling onto the site is always possible.

How is the service at Marine Max. Do they have national standards or is it hit or miss depending on location

+1 on this idea. I have a great mechanic here in SoCal. Honest, fair prices and Sea Ray certified. No one can handle everything though and it would be nice to be able to look at who others have used in your area for similar needs and with solid results. Sort of like a Yelp for boat mechanics and other services.

Here in NJ I had good service from MM, but getting there is not convenient for me, so I use a mechanic closer to where I live. Have to factor in the cost of gas and quality of service...

I think that MM does pretty good job, at least our loacal folks who I have first hand experience. However, the biggest issue I found (besides that they charge extra, specially if a 3rd party is involved) is their schedule. Last time I called to have my boat checked they told me over 2 months waiting time. This was last April. I understand that spring is one of the busiest times, but man how're you going to keep your customers, specially in this economy).

I hope we'll have some thread dedicated to refereced services.

Well, this thread has been around for four days and no response from administration. They either don't like the idea or haven't seen it. Someone needs to ask Jim if they really want this. MM

I started the posting and sent the webmaster an email asking him to add a 'Mechanics Recommendation' category if he thought it had merit. I have not heard back from him. I am relatively new around here, joined last Feb and don't really know who's running the show. If anyone knows the webmaster or super moderator could they please give him a nudge. Thanks Don

Don, The second post on the linked thread is the owner of this site, Jim Maier. MM
