I am staying in Secaucus this weekend coming up as my son is going to a concert at Meadowlands....I will have two days to myself as the concert is all day and night....I do not want to stray too far, but is there a waterfront boardwalk with marinas, restaurants, shopping that my dog and I can go to.......Thanks

You can take a ride down to Jersey City to Liberty Landing (about 15 minutes from Secaucus, Exit 14 C off the Turnpike), There is a huge marina as well as a HUGE park on the water (Hudson River), the ferries are there too going to Statue Of Liberty and Ellis Island.... Not to much else in the area.

Wet Paint, Secaucus is kind of a dump, as it's essentially a quasi-urban area in the middle of a swamp, just outside of NYC. However, about 10 miles to the north and to the west places you in some of the nicest and wealthiest suburbs in the USA, with some great areas to explore. 5 miles east puts you in some great vibrant urban areas, without even crossing the Hudson to NYC.

Although not waterfront/nautical, Montclair NJ (15 minute drive from Secaucus) is quite close and has a fairly large and very vibrant downtown with shops and excellent restaurants.

Hoboken (10 minute drive from Secaucus) is a truly walkable historic city directly across the river from NYC and has Sinatra Park on the waterfront which would be great with your dog. There is one small marina on the north end of Hoboken, but it's not exactly a waterfront boardwalk. Great pizza in Hoboken - check out Grimaldi's, one of the best pies you'll find in this country.

Your best bet I think is the Jersey City waterfront, which has 3 marinas in total. The Newport Marina/Yacht Club has a dock and dine restaurant called Michael Anthony's, which offers views of the harbor and NYC, and from the Newport neighborhood you can walk south along the Hudson River for fantastic views of NY Harbor. You can walk to Liberty State Park (which has it's own marina, Liberty Landing). The park is huge (about half the size of Central Park in Manhattan), has tons of open space for your dog, and the best views of Statue of Liberty that you can get by land. I keep my boat across the canal, at Liberty Harbor Marina.

You can walk from the Hoboken waterfront down to the Jersey City waterfront, it's all connected along the Hudson River. On a nice day it's a great walk, and the vistas cannot be beat.

Further south (one hour's drive from Secaucus) is the northernmost edge of the acclaimed Jersey Shore. Red Bank is a very pretty town with a nice downtown with great shopping and dining, and a small waterfront park that has at least one (and I think 2 ) marinas.

Liberty Park is exit 14B off the Turnpike. BTW...what hotel allows dogs? I doubt they will allow dogs on the ferries.....

Great Tommy...That sounds really good.......OSD....The beautiful Red Roof Inn........I have 3 boys with me too

The red roof in huh? So thats the one off of meadowlands parkway i assume? as most have said, that area is a dump and is right be the highway (route 3) so it might be a bit noisy. FWIW, you are by a waterway, called the hackensack river. There is a driving range on the water with watering hole for some drinks (if you like golf), and a small marina close by, but I really doubt its anything you want to see. There are alot of outlets (i.e. for the wife) to shop at too. If you want a good dinner, close by, go to Bareli's (on route 3 east of you). Expensive but amazing food.

The boys will be at the concert all day saturday and sunday........I figured it was a dump.......Needed something close to the meadowlands and they would take my dog

Yeah, don't spend much time in the immediate area around Secaucus, as there really isn't anything to see. By no means is the area unsafe or anything....it's just "blah". Per my earlier advice, I'd suggest Hoboken/Jersey City along the waterfront one day, and another day getting into Manhattan to maybe explore Central Park with the dog. I have no idea if the ferries allow dogs or not. I know that the PATH (a subway system between NJ and NY) allows very small dogs, as long as you can hold them.

If you feel like escaping the hectic NYC area, like I said Red Bank is an hour's drive and is quite nice for a day trip.

It's looking like it's going to be a nice weather weekend here. You might want to go even a bit further south, and take the dog for a walk on the beach at Island Beach State Park. But then again, since you hail from Cape Cod, you might want to do something OTHER than beach and explore some of the more urban areas to the north!

I plan to be waxing all weekend. I have a spare HF rotary. You're welcome to come by and practice. My itty-bitty dog will teach your dog how to chase ducks all afternon.

You can come my home with your dog... We are only 3 miles from where they film the jersey shore... If its nice day the boardwalk is fun. Here's a pic my wife took last Sunday on BW..

I'm not sure I would drive all the way down to Red Bank. It is a nice place, but I'm sure you might want to explore areas close to where you are staying. Since you have a dog, you might want to consider going to Central Park in NYC. For nice places to eat around the Secaucus area, I would recommend Pasianos (Bring your own wine) 132 Park Avenue Rutherford, NJ 07070-1959 (201) 935-5755 or if you like a nice view of Manhattan try the Chart House on Harbor Blvd. Weehawken, NJ 07086 (201) 348-6628 both locations have alternate restaurants close by. Hoboken (Washington Ave) has a bunch of out door places to eat and plenty of bars at night. There is a PATH (Train station) that will take you into NYC if you get bored with Hoboken. Parking in Hoboken is a challenge. Plan on using a parking garage.

Thanks again for your suggestions.....I will do Liberty Landing as that seems to fit what and where I want to be and I can take a dog on the ferry so I will wing it from there....

If you are staying close to Harmon Meadows, you can take the NJ Transit bus into the Poert Authority Bus Terminal in New York City. From there you will have access to the NYC Subway system and you can go all all over the city. The buses run with great frequency even on the weekend. The Red Roof Inn is about a 1/2-1 mille north of Harmon Meadows on the Hackensak River, so it is an easy walk. There are also a lot of stores and restaraunts in Harmon Meadows. Harmon Meadows is a large Condo complex.
