Some iComs have a speaker built into the mic which is a nice feature. IMO, they have an excellent reputation for quality, probably better than Cobra. I think you answered your own question when you said you don't see Cobras much any more. Last time I saw one it was a CB radio.

now I"m back to looking at the standard Horizon 1600 or 1700. How loud and clear is the speaker on this one? I know I can mount a remote speaker with this unit, but don't want more clutter on the dash than I all ready have.

BBC,

Jim at BOE had really a nice Standard Horizon with a Built in AIS receiver and display that I bought a few months ago. It was networkable too so that you could display it on your GPS. I just tried the link for it though and I got a 404 message. Maybe he sold out of them?

built in AIS, sounds like a $600 radio I'm going to use four time's a year. Really would like to stick to $200 or less. Biggest problem with the one I have now, can't hear the thing wile at cruise.

I just edited the last post, What model? I have seen AIS campatible for just about $200, but not with the transponder. I have not seen the speaker in the mic also with the Standard Horizon without the $100 remote station option.

Standrad Horizon gx2000 you must be talking about, that Does have the speaker in the mic. Good deal, Thanks about $200.

This is the one, see this thread:

It doesn't look like Jim has any left but maybe someone else does.

Man, that was a good deal. I did a quick search and can't find it for under $330+.

Looks like there gone. Now $330 for the replacement gx2150. Thinking that gx2000 will work good. The AIS would be nice, but for how much i'm out on the water were the radio is needed, don't need it. Just last summer when at Munising and Detour, some emergency calls were coming across the radio and chouldn't hear it with all the other noise. So I would like to get a radio that I can hear.

Check the new Lowrance link-8 - with NMEA 2000 interface and dual channel AIS receiver. Street Price around $305,- It is built by Simrad. Simrad has a the same just with option for a wireless handset with 300' range. (Simrad RS35)

sky is the limit here, the Lowrance would work good with my hds-8, don't seem to here much good about the Lowrance VHF as you do the standard Horizon. I know when I bought my Hds-8, Jim at boe told me the Standard Horizon was the way to go, I just didn't make the purchas at the time.

BBC,

It might be worth a call to Jim at BOE. Maybe he has something in the store that isn't on the net? It can't hurt to ask and see if there is something there with the speaker mic that you want for the budget you want to spend. Good luck!

I just ordered a Lowrance Link-8 for my dad - I'll let you know what it feels like. So if you can hold of for 10 days - :) I'll report back. But it does fit your requirements. Simrad has a stellar reputation in Europe for top quality products - and since it is more or less the same as the Simrad RS35 - I think quality is close to Standard Horizon.

I have the Cobra. Works well for my application. I don't spend a lot of time on big water though. Typically I use my radio to hail the harbor master for a transient slip.

When and if my radio goes I will buy nothing but Icom, my 320 I installed an ICOM 504 great radio, I just purchased a Icom m92d handheld for my ditch bag, and Im thinking of throwing my Northstar ns100 overboard and installing another Icom in this boat .they are built to military specs. Another member here dropped his Standard Horizon radio and it cracked, virtually useless. He replaced it with an Icom. Just my 2cents

Do the Icoms come with the speaker in the mic? I think that is the primary reason BBC was looking at the cobra in the first place.

Looks like only as a second station handheld mic/speaker combo so it wouldn't work for the OP
