Man Finds Winning Lottery Ticket...

I'd be retired and buying a new boat! Glad to see there are still some people with morals in this world.

being purely honest.....nope
the question that comes to mind for me is if it is not signed...and no one ever does till it wins...how could someone possibly "prove" ownership of what was probably a quick pick ticket ??

I found a $100 bill on the ground once and started knocking on doors nearby to try and find the owner. I only made it to one house before a distraught 13 year old ish
girl and her mom in an SUV came driving slowly down the street and it was pretty obvious it was theirs, they had earmarked it for Disney Land tickets. Money returned.

I found $40 on the ground at a MLB game as the game ended and 40,000 people made their way to the exits. That was a free ticket for me, no way its practical to try and find the owner nor did I try.

A stray lotto ticket seems to fall into the latter category to me. How do you know the person didn't just toss it, in which case its fair game, they obviously don't know it was a winner, and its unlikely they won't know they lost out on anything anyway. Its almost impossible to prove the winner. I don't know that I would look for the owner or turn it in like my latter example. I would have a clear conscience and a 55' Fleming.

Judge me if you wish, hell no I wouldn't have turned it in!!!! To me, that falls in the fate category. I'd be smiling all the way to my early retirement!

Above and beyond is right, he made a big mistake. There is no reasonable expectation that the true owner of the ticket can be found. Further, he had no obligation to even try to find the original owner. It was his ticket to keep and cash in for the prize money.
He may still get lucky and end up with the money since it would seem that it would be very difficult for someone to actually provide proof that they bought that particular ticket. Possibly a video camera in a store would have picked it up if there is a record of the actual time and day that the ticket was sold.

I would retire early!

I like the idea of a 55' Fleming!
You have to wonder though because the article also said that the man sells lottery tickets. Did he really just find that ticket or did he do a scan of the ticket and tell a customer that it was a loser?

With most state lotteries an employee of the retailer that sold the ticket cannot claim a winner from their workplace, no matter how they came into possession.

Unless it was a big winner there probably won't be anyone looking. I'm sure their cousin or aunt would be more than happy to cash it in.

I had a guy try to keep a ticket that was a $10 winner. When he said it was a loser and didn't return it I became suspicious. I demanded it back and he returned it. When I took it to the grocery store they told me it was a $10 winner

I don't really play the lottery often. When I do I buy 1 ticket for a really big jackpot. I should have reported that scumbag to the Virginia lottery.

With today's technology, the lottery people know exactly where, when, and if the store had cameras installed, who, exactly purchased that ticket. But DAMN that's a lot of money :smt089

That is the point, it is a big winner, they will check, and he didn't give it to his aunt, he turned it in as lost.

I've found money twice in my life. The first time was a money order for a few hundred bucks outside a grocery store. I went into the store, gave them my name and phone number BUT NOT THE AMOUNT OF THE MONEY ORDER and told them if someone came in and reported losing it, have them call me. If that caller could tell me the exact amount (it was an oddball amount, not like $400.00) then I'd give it back. No calls within two weeks so I cashed it.

The second time was in a large department store. I found a cart with a woman's wallet inside. I looked in and there was almost a grand in the wallet. I went to the customer service counter and the manager and I opened the wallet, found her ID and were on the phone calling her house when she came running back into the store. It was Christmas time, she'd just left the bank after taking out the money and was frantic because she figured she'd lost her family's Christmas money. To say she was thankful I had brought it back to the store was a gross understatement.

$6.3 million.....I'd be on that new 55' Fleming heading for that next horizon.

Great to know there are still some descent folk out there! Makes up for some of the other "schmucks" one meets daily!

While gambling in Vegas I looked down and found a wad of bills "near" a guy on a stool ,it would have had to roll a bit to be so far from him so I picked it up and asked if it was his. He turned looking confused and said oh. Yeah and stuck it in his pocket. After walking away I knew it wasn't his!!!!!!! I never looked back because it wasn't mine either! If it was meant to be Gonzalez will be paid back for doing the right thing!!!

I once found a $100 bill on a busy street in Boston, put it in my pocket and kept walking....MY Lucky Day! I also once found a Visa card right after a woman dropped it as she got in her car. I called her at home, but she never came to get it. I cut it up.
