Hello everyone

I have a renewed enthusiasm for my 02 24 Sundancer, I have a slip on Lake George (NY) until Colubus Day. I was going to sell the boat and then decided to give some thing other than trailering a try. Lake George has always been my favorite place, we took delivery on 2 new Sea Rays there.

Is there anything special that you have done to making your boat more comfortable for more than a nite or 2?

I am thinking about some kind of mattress pad, any thoughts?

How about a nice little flat screen TV to keep up on the news and weather?

How is everyone handeling the big DTV switch next month?

I thought I could use my VHF antenna also as a TV antenna, but I don't know how the big switch will change things?

Maybe a power invertor and a coffee maker?

Thanks
John

I bought some 2" memory foam from overstock.com.....wow what a difference.

We did the same for the aft cabin. Big difference and this is a mattress topper..not a matress replacement.

Also, I have a small Flat screen..maybe 19" with a built in DVD player in my cabin so I can always watch something. the DVD slips into the side of a TV much like an iMac type computer. Very compact unit.

I'll second the mattress topper suggestion. We added one for our mid-cabin berth and it makes it much more comfortable for guests. Our forward berth is already a pretty decent mattress. Just keep in mind that a custom fitted bottom sheet might be a tricky fit as the pad will add thickness. Be prepared to trim the topper in a bit to fit. Big shears, electric carving knife or a hot wire cutter are among your choices for trimming tools.

The DTV switch would require adding an ATSC tuner. Your existing antenna will work just the same. If it gets stations now then you'd probably keep getting the ATSC versions of them. But if they're marginal signals then they might not 'lock in' at all with ATSC. We added another TV that supports ATSC and has DVD built into it. Gets about the same pitiful number of stations as the old NTSC TV through the existing Glomex 'ufo' antenna, so the Netflix discs continue to be useful.

Most coffee makers pull a pretty significant amount of wattage. So make sure you have both an appropriately large inverter AND enough battery capacity. As for the coffee maker, look for one that does NOT have a warming plate under a glass carafe. That will take even more power to keep the hot plate warm. Look for one that has an insulated carafe instead. That way it'll only draw power when heating up the hot water to brew the coffee.

I have the same questions on the mattress. After just getting back from 2 nights on the 320, I can safely say we need to enhance the mattress. What I am seeing is that most people seem to add a pad on top of the exisitng pad. Is that right? Sooo, this question comes from my wife, do you make a new cover to hold BOTH the old pad and new pad, or do you simply add the new pad with it's own cover and have them stacked together?

Memory foam seems to be a favorite, any other ideas?

We bought 2 king size 3" memory foam mattresses from Costco that we will glue together and then we will use the "cheezy" original 2" crappy foam for a template. Voila ~ we will have a 6" memory foam mattress ~ what could be finer?

I cut the memory foam to fit my existing pads, covered all with comforters, cut comforters to fit and secured underneath with strips of door metal along the edges and short screws. If I had a 2006 320 I may consider having an upholstery shop do the covering part.....unless you are real handy and can make it look close to "factory".

As most on this site, we added 3" memory foam from Overstock.com and cut it to fit. The Admiral bought bedding for extra think mattresses and we use those. As for a TV...I just got this 19" LCD TV/DVD that is 12 volts. It works great we are now thinking about how to mount it, but after this weekend, we did like the flexibility of being able to have it below or bring up top after or son goes to bed to watch. Have not hooked it up yet to see how the TV receptions is, but it did play the DVDs very well and decent sound for its little speakers.

As far as LG goes...

Get to the bookstore and buy the book Lake George fact and fancy. We did that years ago and enjoyed going to the various areas of interest.
Head to the public docks..The meter readers go home @ 11:00..Go out on the town...(Free overnight dock)

That's some serious upgrade there. We have a Novafoam memory at home. Not as nice as the Tempurpedic but yeah, on the boat that would be really nice.

Any advice on the brand of memory foam? O.com has a "Highloft" for 50, and then a Serta for $90. Worth the extra $$$ for on the boat?

Joe, If you trailer your boat, and only spend the night on it 3 or 4 times per year, I would not pay the extra for the Serta. The highloft is plenty comfortable for you and Miranda.

We had about 14 nights on it this year Capn, and expect to double it next year.

Inkman,
Can't help you on the bed foam but I can on the antenna issue. First thing I suggest you do is to go to www.antennaweb.org and put in the address of your marina. It will tell you what if any stations are available at your location and how far you are from the broadcasting sites. As far as using your VHF antenna, probably won't help if MA is anything like Chicago where virtually all of the digital broadcasts are in the UHF not VHF band. My previous marina and the new one both had/have satellite TV hook ups. The reason for this is both are too far away to receive an over-the-air signal. Digital signals are somewhat binary. If you are less than 50% strength, you get nothing as opposed to the old analog ones where you would just get a grainy picture.

My new 320 has TVs that all have analog tuners so if I am ever anywhere that I can receive a broadcast signal, I can hook a digital converter box to the main antenna feed that will go to all three. If you can, go with a 120 volt TV since it will be cheaper and you can choose a name brand. I put a 22" Toshiba DVD/Combo one on my previous boat. They also make a 19" DVD/Combo if you have a smaller space.

I am going to look at fabric tonight to re-uphol. bed and surrounding area above. I was going to leave mattress the same and replace old uphols. with new fabric. I have a V-berth that measures 56" per side at it's widest points, considering having to wrap it under to staple. The std fabric only comes in 54"?? I like the idea of the comforter then I would only have to re-up the area around top of bed and curtains. I need to get under v-berth to get at items stored ie. grill. Quint4 do you have any finished pictures of your v berth? You have the same uphols. as me. I was also considering doing the mid-cabin couch/pullout in "leather". Still banging my head about the best way to do it. The vberth in not too uncomfortable but for $60 bucks it sounds like I would be dumb not to replace with some sort of memory foam or the like. thoughts, pictures:huh::smt021 Found a picture on Boats.com and this is what I currently have. Can you see why I want to change it??

Flarepoleman is your bed 2 pieces mad into 1 by tying it in with a comforter? Maybe I can do something like that and still get at the grill or find another spot for the grill? in the aft under the bed there is some space. thanks

Here is couch, same material as this except mine is a portside couch so the configuration is a little different, both are getting faded and certainly outdated. I estimated 31 yards for the vberth with fillers, sides, pillows and curtains. And about 11 for the mid. Sound about right?
