Looking at picking up the Newport series and noticed the infrared is not much price difference. Has anyone went to infrared and regretted the move? Pros and cons? They talk them up in lititure but looking for experience to guide me.

I had one. Worked well for a year or two in the fresh water. Then by year three not so great. Lots of money. Don't know if others had a better experience.

I have the standard chefsmate magma, it's a decent little grill but definitely takes some getting used to since it's so small. There are distinct hotspots and anything greasy will flare up quite a bit. I've never cooked on a small infared, but the backyard infared grills take some TLC to keep going properly because the elements get a bunch of junk on them and no longer heat properly. They seemed to blow out easier too.

I googled magma infared review and most of the feedback is pretty negative although I doubt many people get on the internet to rave about well their grill works lol

I've had a Newport since 04 what a great grill. Replaced the burner tube 2 years ago and is still going strong. So 13 years isn't too shabby.

Thanks for the feedback... I have an infrared on the home deck as well and love it for some things and not so much for others. I don't see myself doing long cooks for ribs or roast on the boat to often.

I have the Newport infrared and don't have any issues with it. Its not a true infrared grill, but the grates help even out the heat (though I do find hotspots when it's not sitting level). I also like the grates because it helps burn up any fat and catch any charred bits before they fall all the way through to the drip tray. Is it worth an upgrade just to get the grates, probably not. Worth the little extra when buying new, sure why not. You can use the grill without the grates installed, and you can also get the grates to add to a "normal" Newport.

I have one for about 3-4 years, and it works great... I am not sure why it is call infrared... What I like is it doesn't go out with the winds, like my magma kettle grill...
