Made in the USA

In the early days of our country the government used tariffs to pay off the national debt and rapidly jump start manufacturing in this country...... isn't that what EVERYONE wants?

Pay off our debt and create jobs...... View attachment 22044

The only parties in this country who can argue against that are the corporations who purchase our politicians and sell out or country, right?

I'd go with a yes on that.

So we are afraid of the tarriff wars. Why werent THEY afraid of a tarriff war when they said we cant export hardly anything while they export everything? Because they had some guts. We run around scared and agree to everything they demand no matter what the cost. What do we export to them, corn and jobs? I doubt they are gonna turn that down.

Why would folks do this?

Because it's the best job available for them. It wasn't that long ago the American worker was subjected to this. Back in the day labor unions put an end to much of this. I believe their time has passed but the effect of their efforts lives on. China is revolutionizing to a global economy whether we like it or not. If we don't become a global player we will die in isolationism.

Or the folks that own the company that does export that would be creamed by the tarriff war that would begin and Americans that the cost of everthing that would go through the roof.

It was intended to demonstrate what happens in isolation, even if the perps were from other countries. MM

Prices would not go through the roof. They would go up but not through the roof. An Apple Ipad cost over $550. $8 of that is labor in China. That same labor here in the USA is estimated at $50. So an Ipad would cost $42 more. That is 8% or so. Admittedly some items are more labor intensive and would go up more but as a country, we have paid dearly for this free trade. The lost jobs = mortgage default = bailouts = taxes and inflation and social destruction and socialism. I will gladly pay 8% more for my next toaster (given the option) to avoid our current condition. Our boats were made in the USA and we bought them.

My point is the perps were not in isolation, far from it.

Or maybe we can demand they raise the standards of work to an ethical level before we trade with them? Instead of lowering our standards to compete with their lousy conditions, how about they raise their standards?

We can demand all we want. We are not the tail that wags the dog anymore. US actually makes up a small part of the global economy. They need us for sure but with their economy growing at 30% a year and ours at 5-7% they're moving their goods to countrys that are recovering much faster than ours. Bark all you want, but until we get some economic teeth again they'll do what they want.

They need us alot believe me. If the US defaulted on them their economy would fall like a rock. If we halted trade with them they would be destroyed and we would pay $10 more for a toaster and $42 more for an Apple Ipad. Who needs who more? They loaned us billions of dollars, they need that money and interest back. When Donald Trump was in financial trouble with a major property development and he couldnt pay his loan payment, the bank said to Mr. Trump, "Mr. Trump, you have a problem." Donald Trump responded, "you loaned me all this money, and you need it back, you have the problem." He got his loan terms modified in a day and moved on to continued success. So I ask, who has the problem here if we had some balls?

I don't know who brought up the isolation issue, but that is not the answer. One of the thing I did learn in history class 20 years ago.
I go to Harbor Fieght and buy my junk buffer for $20 (I don't have one, $225 Milwakee buffer) no Tariff on that. We build Cadillac CTS's here in lansing. Some do go to China, last I heard 3000 a year. But I believe there is a 40% tariff on that $50,000 car that China's goverment takes.

I would like to know what everybody does for a living? Do You produce something?

Tool Maker/Machinist

Just today I went to my Farm Store looking for a new Lawn Sweeper. I found a 48" Yard Truff (I think) for $225 made in Taiwan
Also foune a 42" Ag Fabe for $215. Made I U.S.A. so it said. What do I buy?

I would like to know what everybody does for a living here, That would Tell me why they think like they do.

I hope you bought the best built product for your needs. MM

Sorry but your assumtions are a little off base.
When I worked designing electronic products for the consumer market the gerneral rule of thumb was take what it cost to build it including labour and multiply that number by three. This is the end price the consumer would pay for it. This accounts for overhead, warranty charges, profit (I know this is a bad word to some) distribution etc. So by increasing the labour portion from $8 to $50 the end consumer would see a price increase of $126 not $42.

Bingo! If we don't hold imports to the same standard as required in the U.S., the U.S. will always be at the disadvantage. Some of the Stossel material in this thread makes sense, and I like a lot of what he as to say. But, here he is effectively advocating a race to the bottom.

A strong middle class built this country, keeps it stable and peaceful, creates a sense of opportunity for those in poverty, and provides a population that can afford to buy the goods that also creates a wealthy class of business owners and stockholders.

Do we really want to have an uber rich class living behind gates and the rest of our country heading toward third world standards? I wouldn't want to be the rich guy or the poor guy in that scenario.

Far from a bleeding heart, I'm a business owner and a former business manager. I know over regulation, dopey work rules, poorly educated masses and an insane health care through the employer system are also part of the problem.

We ignore many problems in this country at our own peril.

I've followed this thread for a few days. A good lively debate.

I find today that most people I meet have NO idea of what makes a quality product. Americans in general seem quite ignorant of quality and often the quality things they have were acquired not for the quality, but for the status. I grew up fairly poor, so when we spent money, it had to work or we lost double and it hurt. Whether coffee maker or yard tools most buy a combination of looks like/price and never learn what a quality product does. We also live in a disposable world, rather than get a quality coffee maker that will work well for 10-20 years that cost $75-$100 peope buy a $35 unit every 3-4 years. Of cousre they borrow this $35 every time on a credit card an actually pay $150 for it but that is another story.

I am using "coffee maker" symbolicly, in this post, but if you want a good coffee maker the most important spec is watts. The higher the watts the better, but no less than 1000w to make a good cup-o-joe.

MORE OF THAT FORIEGN SH!T!!!

Only if the water is 110 degrees going in. (105 degrees if you warm the press.) MM

But I stick with a traditional stainless option with a carafe!

We are actually in the midst of bringing a medical device to market. I've tried to get the manufacturing done in the US but it is very difficult and expensive. At the end of the day, we'll probably not only build it overseas, but will only sell it overseas for years due to the whacked regulations in this country. That's fine... I won't have to pay US taxes on it either then. What a great system! But it's fair!
