Mackinac Bridge Crossing 2/5/14

By sheer coincidence, my bro sent me a linky to an old video of Lowell Thomas (most of you are too young to remember him) doing a video on the building of Mighty Mac. I thought you Michiganders might like to watch it....

I've pulled my travel trailer accross the bridge. The wind was howling, the warning lights were flashing, I stll wasn't concerned......untill I got up on the bridge!! I told my ex to be quiet and turn off the radio. I white knuckled accross that bridge just knowing the wind was going to push me off. The guard rails are low and don't look like they would stop you from going over.

I crossed the bridge this past July to go to a meeting in Sault Ste. Marie. I always wanted to cross over in my convertible - so I did. While crossing, I saw a black wall of clouds very near to the west and these very strong microbursts of wind pushed me sideways. It was very noticeable with my top down - actually kicked my head sideways a few times. About a half hour after I crossed, this happened:

This happened at the highest portion of the span, between the two towers. Any bets on the color of his undershorts?

I've been under the bridge countless times on the boat. It is about an hour and a half run from Charlevoix and we hit Mackinac Island at least once per summer. Going under the bridge is far more impressive than going over it, IMO.

Thanks for the link, that is the video that they used to play in the pizza place.

Mackinaw City is going to be my home port beginning this year...provided it thaws out. Should be a year of fun and discovery although we've visited many times and were employed on Mackinac Island in the college years. Looking forward to it.

Straits State or City Marina? Love the ambiance and location of City but the floating docks at Straits are hard to beat for us. Although City is adding floating docks, they haven't made it out to the bigger slips yet.

BTW remebered that I wanted to post this pic of the Mighty Mac taken a few years ago. East of the bridge looking west at the sunset. Note the Star Line rooster tail....

I can't wait for August. We'll be in MI and are planning a trip to the bridge the first week we'll be there. For you guys who live up in that part of the state, if you were going to stay there for a couple of days, would you pick St. Ignace or Mackinaw City?

Municipal marina. I couldn't get the state to lease me a slip for the season...at least not yet. Seems they have some kind of gentleman's agreement with the city to not take seasonal business. It's kind of amenities vs. floating docks. City offers a little more but it's nice and peaceful over at Straits. Given the choice, I would have preferred the state marina...sans all the goose droppings.

One night in each. Or better yet, two nights on the Island.

Absent floaters, as I said, I prefer the Muni (City). Great staff, very accommodating. I have never stayed at state where there have been more than a dozen boats in there. June, July, August - doesn't seem to matter. And yes, the goose poo is pretty bad. Walking up to downtown from muni is also very convenient. But getting the Vespa off on the floaters at state is necessary in my case. Anyway, we'll be up there this summer at least once. I'll look for you and say hi. Enjoy the beautiful area!
