Charlene and I just drove over the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan. Most will know this bridge is the only connection between Michigan's mainland to the Upper Peninsula. Charlene took these as we crossed with our Peterbilt truck headed back to Wisconsin.

This one you can see an icebreaker went thru. We didn't see it as its trail went from horizon to horizon.

I hope to one day make it up to the Straits by boat and get the view from under the bridge. Its pretty impressive engineering.

This was on the St Clair River on Monday coming from Lake Huron. Looks plenty capable of doing some serious ice breaking.

When I purchased HYDRO-Therapy in Grand Rapids, MI, in 2010 I hauled it across the Mackinac Bridge with my 2006 Silverado.
We got to the bridge at noon and because of bridge maintenance work that was going on had to wait until 6 PM at which time all trucks and over dimension loads were led across the bridge by pilot vehicles. If there had been a wind we would have had to wait until 6 AM.
I was so nervous (although there was no reason to be) I forgot to take some pictures while we were making the crossing.
Awesome structure.

Nice pictures jitts3!
I've crossed it a few times to and from Florida with our wide load flags and banners. Fortunately no maintenance, delays or escorts needed.
Though we have to drive northwest 2 more hours I always feel like I'm home after going though the toll booths.

I wonder what ship went through the straits in Feb? Obviously one capable of breaking ice.....

USCG Ice Breaker leading two self-unloaders full of road salt (50,000 tons) to Milwaukee: The Canadian-flagged bulk carriers Algosteel and Algowood were transporting the salt from Goderich, Ontario. They were slowed through the Straits of Mackinac as they followed a U.S. Coast Guard ice cutter from Lake Huron into Lake Michigan per Milw Journal

We went over one winter in the F450 loaded with 3500lbs in the bed, they weren't going to let us go over because TT he wind was high..... Well they let us go behind a loaded flatbed,we got 1\4 up the bridge and there was a covered snowmobile trailer chained to the bridge . the wind was trying to break it loose ,I was white buckled.

My father came to see it with his family when he was a kid in 1958. It impresses me still. And I'm originally from NJ and been over the bridges in NYC more times than I choose to remember.

I could see how if the crosswinds are bad enough. Acording to the info radio on am 530 it's 199 ft from the roadbed to the drink at mid span and another 295 to the bottom.

Now that is one bad ass picture.!

I went over the "Mighty Mac" the first time as a young kid in the winter of 1957 very shortly after it opened. I've been over it numerous times and it always impresses me. The last time I was over it they still had toll booths. I was in college and went up there with some friends. None of us had much money (nothing surprising there) but we had lunch in St. Ignace and spent all of what we had. Then one of us remembered we had to pay a toll to get back to the lower peninsula.

We had to borrow the money for the toll (I think it was $.35) from someone in St. Ignace so we could get home. Funny story now. Not so funny back then.

We're headed to MI this summer and likely will be going up there again.

The tolls are still there $25.00 to get the 5 axle semi truck across. I love the pictures you guys are adding to this. It actually makes my day that we could share today's events. Gives us inspiration on what we will do in the future.

Been over that bridge dozens of times, still amazes me every time. They used to show a video of the construction of it at a pizza place in Mackinaw city but I think it burned down.

Here's a sunset pic taken (not by me) of the Mackinac Bridge from the laker Wilfred Sykes a number of years back..Laker Sykes MackinawSunset4-02-ec.jpg

Ive crossed it many times,i have pics somewhere(old computer i assume)of us on mac island with our sleds and the bridge as a background. Also pics from drummond i think.I will look later i am leaving to finish paperwork on the boat sale.
