Well, it finally happened, while fueling up for winter storage, the chain on my port gas cap broke when I pulled out the funnel after adding the Sta-Bil. I put the waste cap on while the bottom got washed and went to find a replacement. Turned out the marina store had a Sea Choice cap the was a perfect fit. So for other 88-89 300 DA owners out there, a Sea Choice cap is a good choice if you need a new cap in a hurry.

BTW, one of my winter projects is going to be making new cap attachment CABLES out of stainless steel fishing leader with brass swivels. Cheap, simple and should be much stronger than those flimsy ball chains.

I lost a gas cap while refueling my '93 330DA back in 1997. Same thing...as I pulled out the fuel nozzle, the chain snapped. I was a few hundred miles from home and didn't have any luck finding a replacement.

Every boat since....including that one.....I have removed the chain from the fuel caps. I just take my time removing/replacing the caps and haven't lost one since.

I do have a tidbit to add on the chain cable connection. I lost the cap on our 280 this past summer; same deal chain popped off. I did find a replacement and amazingly enough found the cap. Low tide is good for something. But I do want to point out that the cap is bonded to the boat's ground through the chain. The bond wire actually attaches to the same bolt that holds the chain clip to the filler neck. If you want to take the cap off the chain as Dom did, there shouldn't be a problem. However, if you keep the cap attached to the boat and do not ground the cap, you risk a static discharge when fueling. That can lead to an explosion. You might think about forgoing the swivels.

I'll have to look for the part number. I'm having them get me another one to keep as a spare so I'll be sure to post that number when that cap comes. I think the number is on the cardboard card the cap came on and that is probablly on the boat. My boat uses the smaller style threaded caps as opposed to the larger caps that were on my old boat.

On my '87 the fuel caps where made by Wilcox-Crittenden & Co., denoted by a WC logo inside the cap.
WC does not make caps anymore. So, I spent a lot of money on ebay buying what dealers called WC caps. Most of the caps where not WC and did not work.
One day last year I walked into a local marine supply store which is a SEA CHOICE dealer. I now have new caps for my fuel, water and waste with spares, all for about $20.

I too lost both of my fuel caps when I cut them with the fuel filler. I switch to cables instead of the ball and chain oem setup. Easy to retro they connect to the cap with the same phillips screw and then they have what looks like a key ring that you contract and push into the hole. When you let go it expands and it holds the cap. Never lost another. It was a pain finding a cap that fit. i think i order replacement and a spare from MM

I have brass chain we use at work to fish wires down walls. It's easily available at Lowe's or Home Depot too. @ $140 for 100' and no-one needs that much, the brass is cheaper. I can't imagine why it would make a difference.

UPDATE!!
I finally got the new spare cap from the boat. The part number is: SEACHOICE Products 32551 replacement cap. Fits 32251, 32261, 32271, 32281. Hope this helps someone. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I lost a cap this year refueling, went to MM paid $30 then found out its made by Attwood. Same part # on the site was $14. Oh well.

I lost the gas cap for my 1985 Monaco. Do you know where I could find one?

I'm not sure if the one on this link is the same one I need: https://www.ebay.com/itm/283003078477
