I know we have a bunch of dog people on here. I am just trying to figure out if one of my neighbors is a complete moron. How the hell do you lose a dog?

I guess she adopted a shelter dog a few weeks ago. It's a small scruffy looking thing. Anyway, we got an email and signs went up that the dog has been lost. What's strange is, the dog apparently has a green leash and has been sighted in the area. Now apparently, the dog is a bit skittish, so they don't want you to chase her, just call some number. But in this neighbor's case, nobody is out looking. Just putting up a few signs saying "don't chase" call this number.

Here's what I don't get. Been a dog owner most of my life. Sure, there have been times they have gone off on their own. Usually happens when we let them out on a tie up and they break free or pull the stake out. But they only get about a 10 min head start. We usually find them wandering around the neighbor's yard or sometimes the neighborhood kids will bring them back. But as soon as we notice them missing, we are out driving, walking, searching for him. And we don't stop until we find him. When we do, we usually feel like he is laughing at us.

So what say you? How do you lose a dog? And is my neighbor a moron?

Your neighbor is a moron.

Don't know your neighbor, so I can't judge, but sounds like your neighbor is a dog lover too regardless. With a new rescue dog, I'd cut them some slack, sounds like they are doing what they think best.

When my now wife and I were first dating, her dad and I were working on project at the house my wife owned. I really didn't know her dad well, but during the day, her dog got loose. We looked high and low, but could find the damn dog. We thought we were both dead meat when she got home and bonded over our sure to be certain fate (death).

When she got home we canvases the neighborhood, started making flyers and calling everybody she knew. A couple hours later, a neighbor called and said she had our dog. Turns out, the neighbors kids had captured the dog and put it in their fenced yard.

Moral? Keep looking and hope for the best. Lots of good pet owners out there that will help.

One of my theories is 'When in doubt, pray.'
In this case, I believe it will be for the dog's benefit.

And Yes, I would agree with your assessment.

We raised Lab's before we had our kids and there were a few times when two of them (they always escaped in pairs) would dig under the fence. First thing we did was get in the cars to look and start calling neighbors and friends to help. Didn't give up till we found them and usually found them by the river chasing ducks, although one time they were missing overnight but turned out they were picked up and safe at the pound. These days it seems that everyone is posting online and putting up signs.

There is a scam/hoax going around on Facebook. Most of the time it is about a dog. Says that they found it by the side of the rode after it was hit by a car. Took it to a vet and he is not chipped. Please bump this post to get it home...

No other contact info. The original poster is a "page" for a business - "health/beauty", "Muscian/band" etc. with only one post... And they turn off comments on the original post so no one can call them out as a scam.

Additionally, they run a similar hoax using a lost child or missing elderly person with dementia...

Low life scums...

We 'lost' a dog a few times. I always had a tag on their collar with their name, my name, and phone number.

When we moved into our new home years ago my Irish Setter disappeared a couple times. He made his way back to where we rented which was 8mi away. How he knew where to go the first time I don't know.

My yellow lab once spent the night sleeping under the pool table at a bar about 5mi away.

We'd lose a dog out in the woods once in a while. We'd just leave a piece of clothing, like a jacket, on the ground. Come back the next day and the dog would be laying on it waiting for us.

We owned a Brittany Spaniel for over 15 years. Not once did it wander anywhere. The dog was trained to stay within our property. She hunted and would not cross a two track in the woods without being lead across. Those who own dogs rarely spend the time and effort to properly train the animal and then get all concerned when it is allowed to run off.

We have some kind of neighborhood text thing thru ring. At least once a week a cat or dog is lost….. it’s like wtf people
If our dog got lost ….. so be it the lil phuckr didn’t want to be here in the first place…… or he was too stupid to find his way back … another reason he doesn’t belong here

My cousin likes those little fluffy, yappy dogs. The coyotes in the area think they taste good.;)

My grandfather had a chiwowa. You figure out how to spell it.
That rat ran out the door every chance and was gone, Gramps had to walk distances (rural area) looking for that dam thing. Somehow he always found it.

Last paragraph… my buddy got a beagle back when we were young. Was determined to make it a hunting dog. Everytime in the woods that dog was long gone. He did same, we always got him the next day.

What did I tell you ….just got a text

A friend of mine inherited a dog from someone who couldn’t take care of it. He had it for several weeks. It was a real nice dog. One evening he was out working in his garage and the dog was laying next to his air compressor. The air compressor kicked in and the dog took off running out the door. He never saw that dog again.

Absolutely she is a moron. I applaud her adopting, that’s awesome, but then take that role seriously. Losing a dog should not be a thing. Just my opinion.

We lost our dog once. We are extremely careful to keep him on a leash almost 100% of the time unless he is in an enclosed yard. We were up at our cottage one time, with the dog, Buddy, asleep on the deck at our feet. We were just chill’n with drinks. In a flash he is off like a shot. A fox walked through our yard. Fox ran and the dog was gone after her. I ran after him but he was gone. Most of our neighbours know our dog so I was asking people if they had seen him. A few helped me look and were calling his name as we ran up and down the road.

Thats when I met a guy that lives about 10 houses away on the route the dog chased the fox. That asshole started to rant at me about keeping my f-in dog on a leash. I told him that I do, but he bolted after a fox, and he was an f-ing asshole. If his house was burning I would drive on by. Anyway, Buddy comes trotting out of the forest with a grin on his face and came back home. We’re more careful now.

I saw a woman walking a cat on a leash yesterday. I was going to take a picture but I thought awe leave her alone she has enough problems.

There are some real dicks out there. We have 2 golden retrievers. We live on a large parcel of land. My dogs are allowed to run free. They have never been on a leash. They stay pretty close to home.

Neighbor is a moron for sure. I've had dogs my whole life. If one ever got away, I did the same out looking until I found him. But for the most part, none of my dogs have ever actually ran away. I have always had Labs, so a few have followed their nose and wound up only a few houses away.

@Woody in the woods, that is very smart to leave clothing behind. Although I don't think I could ever leave without them.

If Cody were to wonder and I actually lost him, I wouldn't sleep until I found him. But he never leaves my side, ever.
