What date do you guys prefer for our LI Rendezvous?

Alright, sounds like we have three options to choose from.... well let's make it four:

1. Champlins
2. Mooring
3. Raftup off the Dinghy Beach
4. Other option (possibly different marina)

I personally fine with any of the options. However, I'm more for advanture type of stay, so mooring or a raft sound like more fun. I totally understand the situation with mooring. In the case if we don't get all the balls close by upon arrival, possibly we can take the closest available and later switch to other ball as they become available. I can take the furthest ball as I have no problem moving from ball to ball (I know that some folks just want to stay still for the length of stay as soon as they shut the engines).

Let me see if I got the current votes correctly:
Alex = Open for any option
Russ = Mooring
Shadow9999 = ?
Sea Gull = ???
Todd = ???
Larry = Raft
Ididntdoit = Raft

Larry,
I know you're in for the MYC gathering, so I assume you're in for the Block trip?

Jeff,
Are you in for both or what's your plan?

Ididntdoit,
what's your status are you in for the Block or MYC as well?

Hey guys,

I hope you all had great Memorial day weekend and took your boats out for a nice trip.

Can you respond with your preferences in regards to the Block Island? I just want to avoid a situation when a group votes for marina, but we're too late to book it. If we all agree to a mooring, then this is not an issue.

I'm in for block - not sure on Montauk yet - we may just go straight to block for the weekend and meet when you guys make it over. As covered earlier in the thread, even on a weekday finding multiple moorings will not likely happen - to make matters worse "large" boats are restricted to the few orange moorings on the perimiter (not sure of the cut off for the green moorings - maybe 50'). For smaller boats, rafting on the moorings is an option - but each boat pays full price ($40/day).

As long as you let out plenty of scope, holding in the anchorage off dinghy beach isn't really a problem. The problem - like most anchorages - is the wingnuts that let out 3:1, don't account for the tide, and wonder why they end up against your boat when it starts to blow 25mph. That said, weekdays should be fine - plenty of room and not a lot of other boats to worry about dragging into you or running over your rode.

BTW I will be traveling with my wife and two boys (8 & 10) and leaving from Mystic, CT

Sounds good. I added you to our BI list of participants. Would you mind giving me your crew names?

BTW, good point on the mooring restrictions. Do you have a contact info I can call to get more details?

I wish more people would respond so we can plan in advance. I guess, we'll just have to wait.

I called........The Limit is 46' on the green moorings and up to 55' on the orange ones. Rafting is at the harbormasters discretion based on the size of the two boats (Two 30' on a green mooring should not be a problem) larger boats rafting will have to have an orange one. The moorings are still $40. (Both Green and Orange)

Can you guys clarify where the mooring field and the anchorage areas are?

You have correctly identified Champlins. There is no "Champlins" mooring field that I know of.

The area between your two circles is where the town moorings are located. The area in the yellow circle is private moorings only.

Your white circle is too big, but the area north of the channel is where you can anchor.

Jeff,

Does this looks better? What's in the RED circle (I think I see the chanel but it appears like another mooring field)?

Thanks, I use that site all the time. The only issue is that the photos they have are zoomed in too much and you don't have enough of an areal view, unless they have the feature and I just don't know how to use it.

On that link, if you scroll down then you can click on full map and charts. Then you can zoom in or out and also change between: map, satellite, hybrid or earth.

OK - the open area toward the middle of the green circle and the bottom of the red circle is the chanel - there is no anchoring south of the chanel only moorings - all of the boats north of the chanel are anchored - this was taken on a busy weekend so everywhere there are no boats are prohibited areas (you can see these areas clearly marked on any chart) You've circled part of the town mooring field with your yellow circle - you just need to move it a little east - the private ones are scattered to the west and there is a small chanel that separates the two "fields" (on the western end of your yellow circle) you can't anchor in white #2 and we usually anchor at the western end of white #1 (the boats way in are not supposed to be there) The beach in question is the crescent you see on the far easten side of the picture - beautiful - clear water, sandy bottom, great waves, no seaweed

Ok guys, I am confirmed with MYC!!! There was one little thing though. The girl stated that the "Group" was not in the computer yet but that our reservation is there???? Whatever, she seemed to know that we were coming. I am suddenly nervous.........:smt017

Hey Todd,

I just got off the phone with them and it seems like there was missunderstanding. Everyone was in the computer, except for those who didn't call to lock the reservation with a credit card.

I was told that out of 16 boats everyone has called, but we have one cancellation. So, currently we have 15 confirmed boats.

Hey Alex, Just wanted to let you know that we called and made our reservation. They asked if I wanted to be next to anyone?!?! I just told them to put me near most of the group. Do you know if they are going to try and keep us all together? I am really looking forward to the trip!!

Hey Alex....... Do you know if they are going to try and keep us all together? ......

Yeap, that was the whole idea of gathering the group commitment in advanced, so we can have group reservation, get a $1 off per foot discount and all be together. So, it's a win-win situation for everyone.

....Alex- Do you know who cancelled?

No Todd, I didn't ask. Anyway it's way too early to have the final list as more people may decide to join and hopefully no one else will cancel.

Alex,

i called to verify my spot and they had me for 2 nights. i updated it to 3 nights fri - mon.
i am interested in block, but we may be a late decision maker due to my size. im the shrimp in the bunch.
would love to go just a little concerned.. any thoughts

Sounds great, Ron.

As far as Block, I wouldn't be concerned too much. It's only about 13-15NM from MYC, so we're looking at about 45min ride at comfortable 20kts speed. You'll have 4-5 boats breaking the seas for you. We can have you in the middle so you don't feel left behind. Your boat can handle a lot more than you, so it's all up to your comfort level. I'm sure that if the forecast will call for 6-8 footers no one will go, but with normal conditions of 2-3 footers you should be just fine. We can always slow down a bit so you don't bounce around too much. Most of the boats in the caravan are capable cruising at slower speed and stay on plane.

The only thing I would like to mention is make sure you do the basic maintenance and fix whatever you know should be fixed to have peace of mind that your boat is ready for the trip, which adds huge comfort level.

Let me know if you have any other concerns.
