if i remember correctly, last year we stayed at sailors haven and the wife wanted to walk to flynns , well on her iphone it didnt look too far after some of theyre famous 151 proof pina coladas w/dinner i called the water taxi to bring us back Haha ,so there is transportation to all the spots !!!

Guys

I've been in Florida all week and have not had time to spend on CSR. I owe Alex a call and will then give you some insight to all of the info you've posted. Every location on FI is a compromise, unless you're at the West Hampton Bath and Tennis marina, and even that has it's pluses and minuses. I'll be on tomorrow once I'm back on Long Island : (

Must be tough Brian. How are you holding up with all that sunshine and warm temps?? I feel bad for you bro......

Russ,
I think sailors haven is the best bet, but it is small. A walk through the "Sunken Forest" is pretty cool, I still remember it from when I was a young lad! If it's full I think WH is the second best choice. It has the bar/restaurant and its only a mile walk to Davis Park. Just remember to bring the bug spray!!!!!

Since I'm a guest in your waters guys, I'll vote for whatever majority decides is the best place. In the meantime I've put together a quick reference map of the places we're considering in FI:

So far looks like it's between Sailors Haven and Watch Hill.

Alex - i agree and it looks like WH is winning. It is the furthest away from the action but I suppose that really does not matter. I think the only other issue was the bugs. The votes that are most important are those that are going to meet but I do value everyones opinions. Point being if there are 3 or 4 of us meeting and we all vote for one spot and 5 or 6 others vote for the other not much sence in going with the majority. I suppose we cant go wrong with either one.

It sounds like we have it figured out for the most part, just a matter of maybe getting some more folks involved and then going with the masses.

We are still planning on rafting in Shelter Isl. too yes? On Sunday?

Ok, so here's my take on the 4 transient marinas you've identified. I'll give you my conclusion first; I'd stay at Watch Hill, now my thinking. Some of you will be coming long distances. None of these places will take advanced reservations, so they're all on even footing there. Flynn's and Seaview are open to the bay and result in a fairly rough day at the dock and if there's a wind out of the North a rough night to sleep through as well. Davis park, Atlantique, Sailors Haven and Watch Hill all have ferry service from the mainland, with Davis having the most frequent service folowed by Watch Hill. While Davis Park is more protected than the marinas further west its at a fairly wide open area of the bay and if there's any wind or bay chop you will get pretty beat up there as well. They do spray at Davis so mosquitos aren't an issue there, however rates for non-residents are fairly high at Davis (as are many of the boaters there :wow:). The restaurant at Davis is ok, the bar on a weekend night is pretty hopping, usually there is a live band on weekends as well. Davis is a 25 minute walk from Watch Hill. Atlantique is pretty good, but if you're not an Islip Town resident it can be tough to get in. BTW, I'm a town resident and rarely go to Atlantique. Sailors Haven and Watch Hill are both Federal Parks run by the same private concessionaire. One oddity of both is that the electric service is 50A/125V or 50A/250V in larger slips (14' beam and up). For any boat that has 30A service that means you need a so called "Watch Hill" adapter. If you have 2 30A cables you also need a splitter and the adapter. Both marinas rent the adapter but not the splitter. I'd have to check the splitter I had for the 320 and 40, I don't need it on the 44. Sailors Haven is pretty good, but small with virtually no real amenities other than a snack shop, showers and rest rooms. For that reason it's sometimes easier to get into Sailors Haven. Watch Hill has 188 slips, a restaurant, snack bar, tiki bar, a general store and a pretty active scene on Friday and Saturday nights. The restaurant is ok, on par with the one at Davis Park (The Casino). Mosquitos are an issue at both Sailors Haven and Watch Hill for about an hour at both sunrise and sunset. Off Cutter sprayed liberally makes it bearable for those hours or just hang inside the boat or restaurant. Other than holiday weekends for boats under 14' beam you can usually get a reservation easily on a Friday morning by calling. Arriving on a Thursday night removes that as an issue. I'd vote for Watch Hill  ........now if you think you can get 20 boats together, I can tell you where you can get reservations for a weekend....I could help with 4 or 5 boats myself. :smt024

How is watch hill winning when it's 50/50 split i'm voting twice for sailors haven!!! lol

Thanks Brian, good info, I was leaning towards WH in the beggining and then the bug issue swayed me, not a huge deal but if it can be avoided..., however if they both have the same issue then it really does not matter. I would assume that my BAC level should be high enough to make me and the mosquitos happy at that hour. I have two 30 amp but often find myself needing a 50 and a splitter so bought one some time ago - so no issue for me. I think we will be hard pressed to get 20 boats to commit and then there is the lead/money question and no shows. It would be great if we could, the more the merrier but it is a vacation - may be easier to just commit to a spot and say join if you can and just enjoy. That being said, as I agreed early on I am willing to go with the majority and will make every effort to contribute.

Joe, it wasnt 50/50 when I wrote the post! I rely on you guys in the "know" to battle it out (hindsight I should not have voted).

I would like to see more people involved. I think we have 5 or 6? and I thought I remembered others expressing interest between my old thread and Alex's. Now if Brian has 4 or 5 additional thats great! Maybe we can get to that 20, its a while off.

Russ,

I voted for Sailors Haven for now (that was during the day before Brian’s post). I’m sure we’ll get much better idea when the event forms up a little better and more folks will have better idea on their plans. After reading Brian’s last post I would agree that Watch Hill could be the winner, but it really doesn’t matter right now due to the fact that either one doesn’t take reservations. If both have bugs, but WH has more entertainment to offer, then I would think that it might be a better choice.

As you know, I’ll be at Shelter Island on Sunday either way, hens I’m available for raftup.

I think it’ll help us if we start making a list of participants with their preference for the event (I though we’ll have the poll for this prior choosing marina). Here’s an example of the format I’ve used in the past (Crew, Boat Description, Interested Attending Raft and/or Marina):

1. Alex, Jelena, Michelle(13), Daniel(5) - "Boat A Bing", 2004 320DA – Raft and Maria
2. Russ, (rest of the crew) - "Boat Name", 1997 370DA – Raft and Maria
3. etc……….

I found it convenient having this list on the first page this way it’s much easier to find for everyone. Just a thought.

Ok, got it (just confirming)

Great Idea - like a sign up sheet

How do we do that?

It's actually much easier than you think. All you need to do is copy the sample format from my post, then go to the first page of the thread and edit your very first post by adding the participants list there.

Also, I think eventually the first page shall become like a summary page of the event with exact date, place to meet, communication methods (e.g. VHF channel 68, 69 or whatever) and we could add the image of the charts for meeting place to make it easier for everyone.

BTW, I asked Weslie to grant shared access for me the thread so I could help you with all these, but I haven't herd back. I'll try again.

Yeah, that would be great - I should have waited for you to start it!
If you dont get in I will do it as soon as I get the time.

Russ,

I got response from Wesley. We need to wait for other admins to assist. I'll keep you posted.

Ok, so if i understand correctly,we need input from all that are planning to attend. So far we know Alex and I are attending both the raft and the marina.
Can any and all that are planning please let us know which (or both) you are planning to attend, names, boat, etc, following Alex's format above?
We can then copy and paste details on the front page.

Thank you

I will start -

Russ and Marybeth - "Last Dance", 370 DA, Raft and Marina

Still workin on the wife Russ, but one other thing I wanted to mention about WH. Not that it's a big deal but it does have a pump out station should you need it. There is also a pump out boat that comes around every day in the summer for no fee right to your slip! I toss the guy a few bucks for the convienence. He can also be hailed on the VHF. I am hoping to be there but cannot commit until my anniversary trip is booked! I'll keep you posted. Todd

OK guy's sorry for the delay I was in Fl for a week and i just got back :smt009 I am good with what ever you all decide  I like the idea of meeting during the week rather than a weekend two reasons cost and congestion it can get really busy with the weekend navy
As a new boater with a smaller boat i prefer a Marina over a tie up but I am game for what every one agrees to
Also if we can dock near were there is a hotel in walking distance that would make life easier
I am sure we will get more than 2 boats on this trip

Thats good to know, thanks Todd. It looks like we will be at Watch Hill. Keep us posted, I hope you can work it in.

JRock, welcome back. The way it is shaping up we are going to raft in Coecles, Shelter Island on Sunday August 8. We then will meet Friday August 13 at Watch Hill, Fire Island. I and others will be arriving early, as early as the 10th. I am not aware of any hotels nearby but there might be a campground on Fire Island
