Please excuse my stupidity :wow: but here it goes. I have a 1990 220DA that I just bought this winter. Now by the name I would expect this to be a 22 foot boat but the registration says its 24 feet. Other than whipping out the tape measure, whats the deal?

you answered your own question. whip out your tape and measure it.

our 230 weekender is reregistered at 23 ft. but when you put a tape on it it's 24'8"
our swim platform is bolted on

my best guess is the model numbers come from boat length sans swim platform

try measuring yours with out the built in swim platform and see if its 22 ft

What's with the colors on the Colts helmet?
Jack

Cross between the Ravens and the Colts, not sure who I should root against now that the Pat's are DONE.

I was told if the swim platform is not an option on the boat then it is included in the length. Might be why the 240 sundeck & 260 sundeck are actually the same length.

SR model designations are usually closer to the LWL (length water line) than the LOA (length over all). Tell everyone who charges you by the foot it's 22' but brag to all your buddies that it's 24'. My 340DB is 33'9" LWL and 35'8" LOA.

If it's bolted on, and not removable, then it's included in the length overall.

To the original poster, the dimension of 23' 8" for your boat is referred to as the LOA -- length overall. My 280DA has a LOA of 31' 1". LOA is the length of all permanently attached objects of the boat. Your hull is probably around 22'.

EDIT: Ron typed faster than me on this answer. Yes, I brag that I have a 31' boat :)

All the marina's I called after getting this boat state that they charge per feet based on the LOA.

the Town slips go by the reg. but they had no slips avail...they put me on wait list and told me it will be about 10 years.

Town slip is half the price as the private.:smt021

My boat is a 450 and so..... you'd think it is 45' ?
We are 57' LOA with the dinghy hanging off the back and 51' to back of the swim platform.

The marine industry as a whole has kinda morphed this whole length thing...
Years ago, before integrated swim platforms, or so-called "Euro-transoms" things were pretty straightforward. Transom to bow, and bow pulpits were not included whether they were bolt-on or integral to the hull.

As these designs changed, so did the measurements. Most builders began including the swim platforms into the LOA if they were molded in as part of the hull. Made the boat sound bigger- what easier way to add two or three feet to the length of a boat?
Same with bow pulpits.

Fact is, it's deceptive if you're not aware of how the builder is calculating this measurement.

A 25' boat is now called a 29 footer.
But, it's still a 25' boat.

A swim platform is a swim platform- whether it's integrated or bolt-on. The running surface of the hull is still the same as the 25 footer in the next slip without the integrated platform and bow pulpit, and it's going to perform the same- like a 25 footer.

The 89, 90, & 91 220 DA were re-badged the 240 DA in 1992.....impossible to keep up with sea ray on their numbering/naming.

It's essentially a marketing ploy. The 35' 92 Express Cruiser was 37 Express in 1993. It was the same boat exactly and is about 38'6" long.

Now this is VERY funny because that is exactly what I have been doing.....nice call!!!!

It all depends on if you are bragging to your friends or having to pay dock-age by the foot. (Grin)

Agree with Chuck1, bragging is fun but not with the marina.

I know a guy who has a plastic "colorform" so this one marina he transients at will think his boat is about 3' smaller than it actually is. Hmmmm. My boat has no model number badges at all. Maybe I'll order me up a set of 300DB decals. That'd pay for itself in maybe two overnight stays!

No matter colorform you use, it still only cruises at 15kts.

That's harsh. All this after I saved your relationship with that dude on the other thread!
