Lateset in personal defense

This is a crazy thread. What has happened in the past that you need that kind of weapon? There must have been some serious attacks of a great fear of being attacked, which is it?

Just a lot of crazy people out there, some even there to threaten the crazy ones carrying the guns! Just think, if it was legal to carry and to implement justice, criminals would be more reluctant to perform their dastardly deeds. I have a friend that was in Israel and she witnessed someone stealing a handbag from a woman on the street. No need for the police, a bystander witnessed it and shot the guy right there and went on about his business. Extreme? Maybe, but criminals understand the risk they are taking there.

You must not watch the evening news!

OldSkool, that knife is truly a beautiful piece. I've always admired hand made knives but must admit that I don't own any. I'm not really a "knife guy" but do like the looks of a well designed, well made piece like the one you made.

Thanks GFC. This thread kinda went sideways but it is very interesting. I'm trying some different plating and etching methods so I'll put them in photobucket from time to time. I'm always looking for opinions and comments on design. Each knife I make tells me what it will be as a work it. No plans or prints no copies. What comes out is what it is. I use 2 center lines, 1 down the spine and 1 down the center of the blade then I start pounding and sanding. Way fun. I have about 20 bucks in the tee handle materials but many hours in finishing.

The sheaths are made by a friend of mine accept for the one in the picture which was my feeble attempt.

Give me a sense of what this cost. So I don't have a handgun or ammo. Let's say I walk into gun shop and want a Glock, ammo and likely a holster and other accessories, maybe join a place practice so I can hit the target.

What does that cost me?

So it's a fear thing . No first hand account of actually being attacked?

BTW - I have to agree that the weapon pictured here is very well done. I just don't see the need,

Yes, once here at our house. Someone tried to get into our home after an ice storm knocked out power for three weeks. All I had then was a 12g shotgun with no ammo. That racking sound scared the piss out of them and they Hauled ass. We sit on 6 achers with six neighbors.
Second time was at our marina when a group of us asked a boater to come off plane while in the marina, he went off on me, he was drunk, his wife was on him hard, and I was his target. The whole time he was in my face, my hand was on a 9mm. He backed off, I never pulled the gun. I saw no need until he hit me. The two off duty buddies there asked later why I took the berateing, knowing full well. He wasn't worth the trouble, drunks never are.

OldSkool, I looked at the one that seems to be brass with the lines in it.....Very Nice!

Well I would not feel very comfortable - but I have yet to hear of an incident where it was actually necessary. Being prepared seems like fear. Maybe that is where society is at, we live in fear of the possibility.

I wonder how many people get broken into in the middle of the night where a gun made a difference. I guess the other side of this is however that the thieves know that it's a real possibility the home owner will have some heat, so stay away, or shoot first.

I am not trying to rib you guys on and pick a fight, I don't live there so I am just bewildered.

Scott - When you say a 'lifetime carry permit' Do you mean you can carry it like the police would carry it and take it everywhere with you?

Yes, in Indiana you can except for a few places not allowed by law. I've never had an issue to cause a fear, more of being prepared.

Like Scott said, if someone breaks in at night, I'd much rather be able to defend my wife and kids without on the police to arrive.

When bad happens, people always call the police, someone with a gun.

You actually considered shooting an obnoxious drunk boater on the dock? WTF---wtf-shock-surprise-smiley-emoticon-000703-facebook.gif

Oh heck no! But keep in mind...drunk boaters carry too, and you never know just what a drunk will do. I've never even thought of pulling, but it's there when I might have to and I would never pull unless I plan to use it!

Some years back, my doctor shot a guy dead in his house. Doc was sleeping with his wife and heard someone in the house. His door opened so he asked "who are you?". No reply equaled one shot and a dead criminal. My hero!

Pulling this back into a knife fight.....

The knife displayed is meant to be art and function. To be sure this one is at the low end of custom one off knives at around 500usd. One off custom knives can and do fetch 1500usd to 11,000usd. You notice no engraving or bolsters on this one. Those run for 900usd to 2,500usd. Bone or precious stone and metals are used in special order knives.

When you research custom knives you will find some of them very cheap. That’s because, like painting prints, they are stamped out in a number of runs. The artist designs the knife then stamps copies of them. After numbering them he “breaks the stamp”.

Here’s a link to Jay Fishers site. A world class knife smith. I can only hope to be this good one day. This folding pocket knife goes for 5,800usd.

Just make sure you don't forget you are carrying it when you pop over to Chicago, Scott! :smt001 I actually did one time!

As long as you don't exit your vehicle, it's legal with our permits.

Hey Bill. Nice work. I did not know much about custom knives until I met Marvin Poole and his son. Marvin salvaged a Ka-Bar,for me, that was in pitiful shape. That knife is a testament to the time and craftsmanship of the trade to create custom works. When I last visited his shop he was working on a folding knife, what a job to make one of those!
As a matter of fact, I need to get back by and see how it turned out that is if it's not already gone. Best wishes for your hobby in the New Year!!
