Just to clear any confusion Land Rover's woes really headlined after they were taken over by BMW not when they were part of the Rover Group. Then, the V8 engines Rover used for about thirty years were actually GM Oldsmobile derivatives built under licence by Rover who got their first unit of Karl Kiefaifer of Mercrury Marine who was experimenting with it for their range. Bomb proof reliable and could be tweeked to get 400hp!! (from an engine that you could stand over and lift) although typically only 165hp. But in essence, if it's and old Land Rover it'll be reliable (for an old car) but BMW's various attempts to update it just seemed to make hopelessly unreliable. :smt089
